Consider what happens when China becomes the leading country and we become the cheap labour manufacturer?

So that means our jobs are coming back ? ;)

Definitely an economic disruption coming with the EV wave.

HV batteries are expensive to replace and you'll need a whole new generation of (thin-on-the-ground) "mechanics" to properly diagnose EV wiring faults (here in the Salt belt esp.).

In that ^ respect, service-wise, they are more so Bic lighters compared to ICE cars.

Egon there is nothing cheap when it comes to labor in the USA and China knows this.

Kenya holds third highest Chinese debt in Africa - Capital Business

As you can read China is in the process of owning control of Africa though debt that is mainly to build infrastructure so China can move their manufacturing to third world countries as they move into the role of the most powerful nation. Interesting Musk of Tesla hails from South Africa by way of Canada and Tesla is the only car maker operating in China that is not in part owned by Chinese as I have read. When China becomes the main source of Tesla vehicles for the rest of the world it will just put them in a better position for world power especially if Musk moves his space ambitions development to China like he has done with Tesla.

Today’s scenario but will it hold for the future?

You're preaching to the choir here. I'm still stupid enough to buy the real thing and pay twice what the Chinese clone costs... one reason why I'll never have the money that others do. (Another reason is that I believe in paying taxes on all of my income... making me double stupid.)

Spoken like a true Mainer....

I have my own opinion of electric vehicles but I won't post it here. Suffice to say that if an electric farm tractor ever comes about, I may buy one, but then again, probably not.

As long as China holds all the rare earth metals needed to build lithium batteries...we (the US) should not go all in on electric battery based tech. We would be giving up our energy independence.

That is not moving forward.

Actually the USA has more rare earth minerals (which are not really rare at all) than China. Is just that idiots shut down our refining operations when surrendering to China. Hopefully our days of surrender are over.

Monday I drove 200 miles to look at my first EV and got home with it at 11pm that night. It is a 2016 Nissan Leaf SL. I wanted the 4 camera system for parking lots since I have no head rotation due to the Ankylosing Spondylitis for 40 years. Now I can see curbs, lines, etc on each side plus front and rear position of the car. The regen braking is awesome because it is like pouring gas into the tank instead of using the brakes. I am not going back to the old way if I can help it after putting my money where my mouth was. :)

The link below may be behind a pay wall for some because I got the message I had one free article left. I think like a few are free each month. We are so far behind China and Europe when it comes to EV's.

China Charges Ahead of U.S. in Building Pumps for Electric Cars

Thanks shooterdon. I learn better at hands on training. I keep hearing we are all going to be driving EV's so being on the slow side I knew I needed a head start. I did not know how dumb I was until I got my Smart Phone. :)

I did wait for the 2016 because that was the first year they went from the 24 kwh to 30 kwh batteries that pushed range over 100 miles per charge. I really like the four camera system since I can not turn my head. Now when parking I can see the curbs and white lines. The power and smoothness are awesome and it handles so well.

Maybe my ship will come in so I can look at the new Nissan EV's built from ground up as a EV platform due out in 2021 that are offer a range of 300 miles, 0-60 MPH in 5 seconds and autonomous interstate driving.

I've been considering a Chevy Bolt since they came out but the cargo space just isn't big enough.

We make the 100 mile run between home and ranch nearly weekly, and always seem to have cargo in addition to groceries, luggage, etc.

Tesla's model Y starts production within a year but they will build the most expensive models first. I don't need AWD so I'll likely wait for the 300-mile-battery version.

Our present Subaru Outback and Focus Wagon are 20 and 16 years old, still in great shape but I'm ready for something new.

That's my situation. Minivan is 14 years old, but going strong for now.

I've put down a deposit on a Rivian EV pickup truck. Going by Tesla's 'announcement to actual delivery' times, I figure the Rivian will be available (to me) in 2023 or 2024.

I've owned two EV's, loved them both, but currently all ICE.

I think by 2025 the technology will be maturing to a meaningful degree. BMW talks about having some new killer long range battery solution in 2024 or 2025 for example.

EV's require a new way of looking auto technology in my case. Keeping an eye on China and Europe for direction indicators I expect will be productive. Where we will be by 2030 is not even something I can start to wrap my mind around today.

well, it lasted 2 minutes and 13 seconds anyway.. many people would want to use theirs for many hours, and not have to pay insane electric rates to do that.. electric motors can't compete with fossil fuel motors for cost per hour..

Large outbuildings with solar panel roofs. modular/easy swap batteries and a self driving mule to deliver them to the field sounds good to me.

Technology will march on and make this not only possible, but inevitable just like it did to the horse.

Ford F-15 Electric Coming As Early As 221

5030 you are correct and its name tractorbynet makes that point clear. This thread deals with Rural Living. The rechargeable hand tool thread kind of lead to info about rechargeable cars, trucks and tractors.

The link above drives home electric trucks are going to become apart of the way rural America is going to move tractors, produce, cattle, etc more and more over time.

When it hit me a few months ago that EV's were not only coming but that they are NOW here that I needed to address my ignorance on the subject.

Charging stations are few and far between in rural America but Walmart and others are addressing that fact already along the interstate systems. EV dealerships are few and far between in rural America. Few Nissan dealerships are even permitted to sell the Nissan Leaf today. Will your rural Ford dealer be permitted to sell the F-150 EV?

In fact there are more unknown than there are known's today perhaps.

Living in rural America it took me a 16 hour day to touch and drive my first all electric car and to trailer it home behind my 2010 F-150 on a U-Haul vehicle hauler rated to carry a 5500 pound vehicle. It was over 400 miles of driving and half were loaded miles mostly in the dark. While Leafs have been on the market for nearly 10 years I saw my first one in Murray KY about a month ago. The rumor is Cracker Barrel is getting EV chargers in Murray KY and one new hotel has one J1772 and two Tesla Destination chargers I saw last week.

5030 there is so much to learn and do associated with EV ownership and since I am slow I wanted to get a head start. While I have read 100+ hours this summer after realizing EV's are here now and they are not going away. Today I paid $369 for just a 30 foot a special extension cord to run from a 220 volt outlet that I have to install that will then plug into the car's built in charger. The adapter to be able to use Tesla Destination chargers when there are no J1772 available in rural America was $100 less than the special extension cord with the J1772 on one end of 30 foot extension.

How to care for an $8000.00 to $18,000.00 EV battery pack (a semi truck battery would be more like $100K to replace I expect) so one does not miss charge/use it has a learning curve. My three year old Leaf (21.6K miles) came with a compromised battery that has a 30% decrease in its reported life expectancy but Nissan stands behind it for another 5 years or 78K miles. It has lost 3 of it 12 health bars. Nissan will be involved only after it loses 4 bars. Most Leaf's of the same age and mileage are still report 12/12 bars. In my case the Nissan dealership did not know if the issue is with the battery or the software readout or something else. 8/12 bars will trigger Nissan's effort to come up with answers and solutions. It is rare but all EV brands have battery failure.

5030 I hope you are seeing EV's are not just city slickers issues but they are coming to tractor owners in one shape or another and burying our heads in the sand is not in the best interest of the tractorbynet readers. I am learning a lot from the post of others on this EV thread. Buying one with a known problem is going to force me to learn more sooner I expect. While there is no way to talk to the former lessees because the dealership bought it directly from Nissan leasing I am working from physical evidence that I am finding to build some possible scenarios going forward. The car looks like a new one inside and out and is top of the line (SL) with the optional 4 camera vision feature. This is awesome for me parking since I have no movement right or left or up or down in my neck. I am looking forward to a self driving version one of these days.

When people do not have to give up driving due to health reasons is going to be a great day for rural folks.

My issue with EV's is simple. Has everything to do with where the electricity comes from and the pollution impact as well as the raw materials used to produce the batteries. Like corn liquor laced gasoline, it take more resources (energy) to produce a gallon of e-gas than the e-gas generates in energy. The same scenario applies to EV's.

People with plug in vehicles fail to take into account where the 'juice' originates at. It's a feel good' thing but in reality, the cost to the enviroment far outweighs the benefit, at least at this juncture in time.
