How does your garden grow?

Our carrot fly produces the dark eaten spots like you have. I have to grow a particular carrot variety from the UK that is carrot fly resistant.

Everything I grew from seeds DIED upon transferring to the garden. It was a coolish windy day and I knew nothing about getting plants used to being outdoors. What a bunch of work! These few carrotts did survive, kind of.

It's been a lousy year for gardening here, and elsewhere from what I'm hearing. Cold weather crops are doing well; I picked a bumper crop of cabbage yesterday. OTOH tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash have been a big disappointment. I just planted my carrots a few weeks ago, hoping for a late season crop to store through winter. It will be interesting to see how they do.

Are those a "Heritage" variety? They look a lot like what I raised for a couple of years... the name escapes me.

They are actually 3 different types. The one on the right is mortgage lifter. Next smaller is Cosmonaut Volkov. Smallest is Seattles Best

Another year, same BS. Four Tomatoes ripened on the vine and were GREAT. Many others green not appearing anywhere close to being ready to eat. Then, comes the FROST!

Green tomatoes will ripen in the house. Pick them prior to frost and let them sit in the house in a warm spot.

I pick my remaining greenies when the weather turns. No science, just when I feel there is no more ripening outside. You may be surprised at how good the tomatoes that ripen in the house can be. They have to be reasonably mature before bringing them in, little ones do not ripen for me.

Green tomatoes will ripen in the house. Pick them prior to frost and let them sit in the house in a warm spot.

Pull the whole plant and hang it upside down in that warm spot.

BTW.. our heirlooms are the best ever this year! Will try to post pics as soon as I return home later this week. Sweet, meaty, and extremely flavorful. Will get more details from the wifey. Slice with a little mozzarella cheese, balsamic glaze and some basil. @Heaven!

there is always fried green tomatoes.

Ya, I'll put them in a brown bag on top of the frig . . . seem to work pretty well . . . only now with temperatures close to 100 this week mine are ripening fast . . . :cool2:

Wait as long as you can. They may turn red, but they won't be vine ripened. To extend your season you also can make hoops of black PVC, and put clear plastic over them. to help even more put some black plastic on the ground to absorb sunlight/heat. Light frost can also be mitigated just by covering them with a blanket.

Yep, pretty much SOP here in the north country. I've had mixed luck ripening them inside, maybe a third of them ripen, the rest just rot.
I've never tried the hang plant upside down method, but then again my plants tend to be the size of small trees...pretty heavy & awkward to just pull up & hang somewhere.

Most of my tomatoe seedlings died on transplant. Then, I bought a mature plant at the supermarket.

Those roadside baskets of ripe (cheap) tomatoes look more and more like the right thing to do.

I just planted more cucumbers two weeks ago, this year's crop was downright dismal. I plan to put them in a raised bed with the previously mentioned mini hoops; which will be inside the hoop house which my father gave me. He also gave me a little cold frame kerosene heater which one of his suppliers had given him as a promotion... my goal is to have fresh cucumbers et.al. for what used to be Columbus Day.
