I accepted a three-year long job opportunity and will be moving cross country from Virginia to New Mexico. We’ll be renting out our eight acre horse property in Virginia and moving into a subdivision home in New Mexico. I noticed there’s no grass in New Mexico, so the question arises of what to do with my two-year-old John Deere X590 with 110hrs. Sell it, leave it for my renters, or bring it with me to New Mexico and store it for three years until we move back? Would it be a liability to let renters use it?

Also, I bought a new 14ft PJ utility trailer earlier this year and will be towing it cross country. Do I need to do anything special to it before the long trip? It only has a couple hundred miles on it since new.

Thanks!

Take 2 spare tires just in case.IMHO I would keep the JDX590.Never leave anything nice for renters to tear up.

The tractor is very likely to not be in the condition you left it when you return. The frustration and expense of repairing it can add up fast. Take it with you, put a battery maintenance charger, do wha you can to keep it out of the weather. The cost to move and perhaps store it will be worth it I suspect.
And yes their is liability when others use it.

Depending on what part of NM you're moving to, you may want the Deere and a blade for snow removal. I wouldn't leave it behind. Take it with you. On the trailer, make sure the tires are good, and aired up, and bring a spare.

I don't think reality has set in... it's a lawn mower! Yeah, I know, its and expensive and well made mower, but nonetheless, a lawn mower.

My guess is that putting it in mothballs for 3 years would not be good. I'm thinking I'd sell it and buy a new one if/when you move back to Virginia. Besides, that would also mean that you don't have to haul it halfway across the US.

Hopefully I'm not too brutal with my comment.

Not a brutal comment. Sell it, put it behind you. Moving across the street costs you a lot of money.

DO NOT leave the JD for the renters to wreck!
Do not take it with you!
Sell it before you move!
Buy a new mower when you come back!

I would also sell it. Less to worry about in 3 years...who knows where you will be.

Letting equipment sit for 3 years is not optimal. I recommend selling.

****, at a list price of $8100, that must be one **** of a lawn mower.

If you take it with you, the dry NM climate will keep it from deteriorating too bad, as long as the sun stays off of it and rodents don’t chew on it.

Thanks for the responses so far. I’ve been convinced that I’m not going to leave it for the renters to use because it’ll likely be half destroyed when I get back and also if some one injured themselves on it I could be held liable.

The moving company will move everything except for my motorcycle and lawn mower, but I’ll have plenty of room on my 14ft utility trailer that’ll I’ll be hauling out there so I might just store it in my garage New Mexico. It’s a pricey mower that I’ve paid off already.

The plan is to buy a new CUT when I return and if I have the lawn mower already it’ll be one less thing I have to buy. And the mower should store well in dry New Mexico.

Not thought of this before. Is there a warranty on it? Does loosing 3 years of warranty matter. Can it be extended cheaply ? May not matter one way or the other.

I bought it in 2016 and it has a 4 year warranty so I’d be losing out on one year of warranty. Not a huge deal.

I would haul it if I had the room. Put it on a trickle charger, keep the tank full, and run it for 30 minutes once a month on ethanol free gas.

If I did not have room to haul it, I would buy or put up a lockable shed to store it. Drain the tank, run it dry, remove the battery, remove the plugs and spray some oil into the cylinders. Let the renters know it is not for their use and put it into your rental agreement.

It will cost a lot more to replace a fine machine like that than to store is properly. IMHO.

Do you have a good property manager to look after the renters? Many renters have no respect for your property, abuse the equipment and complain when it no longer works. Had renters on a quarter here, ran the well dry watering the garden 24/7 then bitched to no end about no water. Just one of a series of never ending problems. Good luck on finding decent folks.

Yes! ....take spare tires for the X590 because that's a LONG way to drive a lawnmower! You're going to need them!

oh wait...I may be misinterpreting something here??... :confused2:

Don't leave it for renters!

For a 3 year move across the country I would give some serious thought of hiring an auctioneer and selling everything I own except one vehicle and personal items.

Take everything you own, fold it neatly and put it in your back pocket.

That makes for no hassles or worries about possessions.

Who knows what may happen in another 3 years.

That makes absolutely no sense at all.
Now why would he tow a 14’ foot trailer behind his lawn mower across country?
That’s just going to slow him down even more!

If the job is tempting enough to make a 3 year move, I would also give this some serious thought.
And sell the trailer too. It's just going to drag down the mpg on the tractor. :)

Got a good laugh from the last few posts. LOL!!!! Jon
