Our vehicle 'inspection' consists of a Deputy checking the VIN and logging the Odometer reading. That's done when you get a new or used car before you get plates and costs a whopping $5 bucks. They never even look at lights, fenders or bumpers let alone brakes or suspension.
What area is that? VA inspections are more involved and yearly.

Are you still expected/required to keep your vehicle safe? Considering some of the junk which I see on the road up here even with inspections I understand why we need them.

Like all laws there is what is on paper and what is practice. It seems the law is only for the responsible and law abiding most of the time.

I have never favored the Motor Vehicle Inspection law because it doesn’t make sure that vehicles are actually safe. It’s mostly just another thing that an otherwise law abiding person can get a ticket for and a hassle at time of registration.

In the legislature 2 years ago there was an effort to repeal the MVI law. There was all kinds of organized opposition to that and it failed to pass.

We have an annual vehicle inspection. They check tires, brakes, lights, ball joints, etc. Gets the real clunkers off the road or repaired.

My sister has lived in SC and now OH. Both states without safety inspections. She said there cars on the road in those states you would not see in MA.

That is probably because MA is such a bastion of perfection!

We don't have inspections around here, but I'd like for there to be some, at least for headlight aiming. It's a chronic problem, mis-aimed headlights (and outright bad lighting- people putting HID lights in reflective housings etc.).

We don't have "Safety Inspections" here in MI and I would really like to see some evidence that the inspections in other states a) saves lives, b) reduces accidents, or c) actually makes the hyways safer.

You know there are people that get around safeties, like knowing someone and get the old "lick and stick". I think the statistics would show that it is rare that people get hurt or killed because of unsafe vehicles. Used to be a time when you would get pulled over for a light out and have 48 hours to report to a POLICE station showing the repair. Way too reasonable for this day and age I guess.

I went to school in Mi for 2 years, some if the junk I saw driving around was pretty bad.
I was a VA safety inspector for years and my dad still is, some of the junk people drive will amaze you. Once you see it first hand, regular inspections make sense.
VA isn't overboard with the inspection, just the major safety systems.

I tried to aim the headlights on my Silverado to compensate for the weight of my snowsled on back, but there's no adjustment. As for inspection stickers; it would be more effective if they did to everyone what they do to commercial drivers; set up roadside checks which everyone is required to go through. It will never happen though, as people would never put up with the delays.
The town that I grew up in had "routine safety checks" which was simply an excuse to pull a kid over and check him out for no obvious reason. Somebody eventually took it to court and they were ruled illegal.

You can pencil-whip anything. SC used to have annual inspections. When they did, everyone knew where to take their vehicle and get the least hassle. Pay your money and get your sticker.

I'm glad they quit doing it. It was nothing more than another forced time and financial burden on people by the government that didn't make anything better or safer.
