Broke the new Deere

Something very obviously very wrong from the start. I would have parked it when it happened and left it for the dealer.

That apart, the below bolded statements make no sense to me.

6) survived storms got up sat morn went out to shop and checked mower
7) found mower drive shaft laying on top of mower deck, removed it and looked at it all bent up
8) left for other farm at folks in north missour
9) fixed tractor up there and visited folks
10) came home sunday nite
11) worked in barn all day yest then in evening attempted to mow, thats when i discovered bent lots of noises when i turned on the mower deck

Keep at it, soon you have it all fixed.. and enjoy it completely again, I don't like it when I have a nagging noise or something loose, it is harder now to find since my hearing has deteriorated some..

unless something is totally out of whack ( which i seriously doubt ) its just some kind of mount/alignment issue/adjustment with the deck brackets or possibly with the assembly of the bolts/shaft area for the mower deck, that pto shaft is totally independent and no where close to the front drive shaft ujoint that failed. The rattling/grinding noise has been intermittent since i mowed with it the first time a year ago.

I still think the drive shaft for the 4wd is a totally different issue and nothing to do with the deck noise.

correct on the bolded statements - maybe this helps - found the issues and left the tractor here in the barn
left and went to my folks and worked on one of our OTHER tractors up there ( 5088 IH )
yes i attempted to mow because i needed to mow and dealer is closed on weekends there were no noises driving it - all i was missing was a 4wd shaft - not until i pressed the button to engage the mower did i notice bent pulleys bent and NEW deck noises - i didnt look that closely at them when i removed the bent drive shaft

I can't see that the dealer did anything beyond normal expectations. They actually didn't inspect the tractor fully or they would have caught the second failure. Should be common practice to look this tractor over very carefully and completely. It had a CATASTROPHIC failure.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda. Maybe.

The sad fact is that many don't. And don't really care.

I see - didn't notice there were two different drive shafts involved.

Reading the rest of the comments I would have to commend you for maintaining a calm and reasonable attitude towards what was unquestionably a series of very frustrating events.

they already called me and are sending a tech out tomorrow to look at the rubbing bolt situation and noise i found on the deck - im sure they want to investigate and report to deere corp in case this has been reported before or to check if something was installed improperly

I have to say i have a longer fuse with age but none the less - my diesel truck cracked an injector nozzle last week while on vacation, had to get towed, I was lucky, only destroyed a glow plug no apparent piston/cylinder/head damage, jet ski blew two spark plugs, we all ended up with ecoli from the lake, now turned into a cold/cough, septic system backup from all the rains a month ago, shop AC failed, ran over something in hwy ruined sidewall in truck tire - got 4 new ones, starter went out on son in laws deere mower, so as you can see i have plenty to rant about but i just keep praying and keep giving it all to God, he is in control and i am just walking along trying to help others along the way. I dont know how i could deal with all this w/out him and a wonderful wife, family and friends and of course all of you who have helped me with things on here.

funny you say that i said that to my wife this morning we will get it all smoothed out and we will be in love with it all over again -

That is still one impressive dealer (even if they didn't assemble correctly).

I don't know why anyone thinks this is a great dealer?

The longer this goes on, the more incompetent the dealer looks!

I was watching "Live PD" the other night. A guy took the taser away from the cop, and shot/tased him (the cop) in the nuts with it!! lol

This dealer needs to get a taser and go find the mechanic who's been working on this tractor and do the same thing!! lol

I agree. Even though you went a bit left at the end...

The only thing the Dealer may be guilty of is not supervising the assembly crew to make sure everything was done properly. Crap happens and he is making an effort to make it right. I have seen many worthless shops and unethical dealers.

we call can learn and do better, so mr rob, what if mr DEERE mother ship provided the info to the dealer, tech, and they have an issue from the engineering side of the house, or documentation, do you give any grace to the locals there? I dont point any fingers nor blame unless i have solid facts and multiple faults, none of which i have seen here as of yet.

I have made so many mistakes over the years im thankful for GRACE, these folks take care of it, do it in a reasonable amount of time, and have never once blamed me or tried to discount my claims or questions.

I work in the service industry and provide customers with my skills/time/effort, i say im sorry when i fail and i own my mistakes, maybe that helps me with my perspective as i know what its like to be yelled at and told i am an idiot/incompetent and then i just smile when i fix the problem and say hey if you have any more issues let me know i will take care of it.

that just me, im an old school farm boy and my word is all i have as well as my handshake, im too trusting my wife says, and I have been taken advantage of more than once because of it, but I sleep well at night and those folks that got the better end of me, well, they have that to sleep on. I dont think i would rest well if i was all wound up about all the things i could be wound up about.

kinda like the little girl saving starfish - it may not matter to everyone but the one i just threw in the water it mattered to him

Amen, Brother! There are just some things that are not worth blowing a gasket over.

/ Broke the new Deere #156
Yeah, Rob went a little over. But I agree with his point.

The mechanic, parts guy, secretary, janitor, etc., is the dealer. So far the dealer has not displayed attention to detail. The first problem wasn't on the dealer. Everything subsequently is on the dealer.

I wouldn't rant to the dealer about it either. They are showing you their level of competence. It's naive to expect them to function at a level above that.

No stone throwing. Just discussing.

If it were my machine, I would have preferred they didn't just swap obviously failed parts. I would rather they had spent a couple of extra days if necessary going through the whole thing, first to get a better idea of what caused the problem (which I'm not sure anybody knows yet) and second to make sure of what else might have been damaged. Those steps would have been in their better interest rather than making repeated trips to haul it back.

That's a very good way to approach mechanical problems.... or any problem. But it is also a method that requires an unusual level of ability.
Not every repair shop has even a single mechanic with that kind of knowledge and ability. There just aren't enough of those guys to go around. Never were, and even fewer today.

It also costs money. Consider the number of machines worked on each month, and then ask how many or few actually come back with more problems, then we could determine if the suggestion would be worthwhile. I've known auto "mechanics" who will use customer's cars for their own use, stating that they were "checking it out."

i dont think many, if any would have caught the hairline crack in the lift casting that failed im sure it was small and then after i mowed for an hour and a half it fractured more and then the next time I moved it - just the movement of the tractor finished it off - i leave the deck suspended and it had been sitting overnight hanging from when i had been mowing - if it took that long to fracture completely/open up and break, i dont think anyone would have caught that NOR would i expect any dealer to use my machine for 1.5 hours to test it

the noise when going over a grade and scalp/deck rollers move up on deck, i have never mentioned it because i wasnt able to get it to replicate frequently - i knew i had 5 yrs of wty so wasnt that concern and figured one day when it did it enough to be obvious/duplicate then we could address more easily - my wife n daughter mow most the time and they would say it did it and of course the old proverbial when you take it to the shop it doesnt do it, i couldnt get it to happen frequently enough and if i did it was just slight and i couldnt get off the tractor to investigate because of all the safety stuff so the other night when my neighbor was here we tag teamed it, he is old school retired mechanic and we found it in short order

my wife wasnt around when i could get it to do it the couple times it did act up so i cant really blame the shop since i didnt mention it nor did they possibly experience it when it was there for their work

we are getting storms here, round one is over, power is out, working from cell phone and another wave about an hour out - hopefully power will come back on and maybe the deere guy will still come out later this afternoon
