Those were incredibly tough trailers. I had (have) a 5x10 that I got used about 20 years ago and made many trips that could’ve been posted here. Used it for two moves (everything I own is heavy), brought home all the lumber to build My previous shop, numerous loads of sand and gravel that were probably 2-1/2 times the rated 1000lb capacity. It was quite amazing what that trailer could carry compared to its empty weight. Those were different days and I often didn’t have two nickels to rub together so you make do with what you have. It’s also the trailer that I drag around behind the Kubota when I’m working in the yard.

A couple years ago a wheel bearing went and I didn’t notice it right away and needed an axle. I ended up buying a 3500lb axle and springs, doubling up the frame and adding some better crossmembers and vee braces to the tongue. Changed the reg to 3500 lbs and have had much more than that it in. Kept the sides and the ramp.

It still amazes me what that trailer could take vs its weight.

My dad has a 4.5x8ft SnowBear he bought at Costco a long time ago, out of all our trailers it's probably the most used. We actually had to remount the fenders higher because the tires would run the fenders from being overloaded I guess.

My plan is to build a 5x8 copied off it.

Here's a picture of it without sides hauling stuff back from an auction. (Probably counts as hauling something wrong also!)20190226_111743.jpeg

Do those little trailers have brakes? I have a trailer a little larger without brakes but the law here now is brakes on 3000 lb gross.

No, same law here, anything over 3k brakes and yearly inspections. Lot of trailers get rated at 2990.

They don’t have brakes, originally mine was rated for 1200lbs I think. I put it together with parts from two damaged trailers I found cheap and registered it as a u-built.

I had to look up the current registered weight though. Same rules here, 1400kg or 3080lbs require brakes. It has a 3500lb axle but I only registered it for 3000lbs.

I got the axle and fenders from Princess auto when it was 60% off and figured I’d get the brake parts when they were on sale too but out of sight of out mind. I only ever tow it with my 3500 Ram so not too concerned about brakes on it.

I will have to say that once I tried trailer brakes, I love them.

... 4.5x8ft SnowBear ... Here's a picture of it without sides hauling stuff back from an auction. View attachment 602546
Looks like it has the 'snowmobile' deck like mine with center one-third ribbed steel and the left/right thirds plywood.

The little 4x8 SnowBear is no wider than the Subaru Outback that I tow it with, so little wind resistance on the freeway. And it will slip through any tight spot that the Subaru can go through. Congestion in a parking lot, etc? No problem! Hold my beer and watch this! :D

I originally bought it for the many dump runs when I had 50 years of Dad's yard sale 'treasures' to sort through and dispose of. Now 20 years later, its handy to go into the apple orchard to pick the family trees. And then hitch it to the Subaru to take the fruit home without transferring anything. Other uses are extremely varied.

This is my 12 year old 6 x 10 snowbear trailer. Same as yours with the plywood outer edges and metal center, plus metal at the front deck. It usually stays on the farm and gets towed around by the side-by-side taking jumps in and out of the ring, grass and brush or bales from the fields, dirt or mulch, garbage to the road, etc. It has a 3500 lb axle with no brakes, but i don't usually put much more than 2000 on it because the tires are a bit skinnier than a regular car tire and won't handle that much weight very well. I can roll two 5 foot round bales up the ramp though, and cart them around with the side-by-side and they are light enough that they don't damage the fields when the ground is too wet for the tractor to travel without leaving ruts. Once or twice a year though, it gets to carry the side-by-side instead of being towed by it, when we go to a horse show where the rings and stables are far enough apart that it helps to have transportation for the show grounds.

Mine doesn't have the benefit of the California sun though, so it is waaaaayyyy more rusty than yours is. I use fire hose over my straps so the rust does't chafe them too much. Still though, it is a handy light-duty trailer that has held up well considering I paid less than 1000 for it new. Have replaced the bearings on both wheels, am on the second set of tires, and re-did the wiring to be full circle pos & neg because the ground-to-frame kept rusting out. Other than that, no problems.

Here’s one of the best I’ve seen. These idiots rolled into the parts store with nine 55 gallon barrels or maybe a tad bigger ones on a single axel lawnmower trailer. The trailer jack was nearly dragging the ground, the trailer frame was obviously bent, and the truck was nearly dragging the ground. They decided the right course of action was to buy a taller hitch. Then the jack bent trying to jack it up and they couldn’t get it on the taller hitch. So then they had their hefty girl friends get on the truck tailgate to squat it enough to clear. Other then the obvious approach of making 2 trips they could have moved the barrels back and avoid most of the problems. View attachment 602353View attachment 602354

Just think of all the beautiful useful things that were built from that tree.
