If you lock them in a certified gun-case.

Except Kando(oo) has already tried that most ancient of tools (the pipe-wrench) and, not only did it not work, it was the main cause of the drain plug being rounded.

I’m pretty sure it was user error combined with a crappy pipe wrench. I’m also pretty certain a 12” pair of knipex would work. You could put my 10” knipex on it and put a cheater pipe on the handle and they would hold until they bent. They’re not really a tool designed for cheater pipe use.

They would drill it out, plug it with timber in the hole, Timberhole. I'm sorry...couldn't resist.

I had a transmission case that was busted around the plug. We drilled an taped the plug and JB welded around it in an attempt to stop the leak. Unfortunately that didn’t work so we ended up taking it apart and having it tig welded.

I used my knipex cutters today to cut some screws because I needed short screw and all I had was long screws. I know my Channellock cutters wouldn’t do that without damage.

I’m not certain if it was only in Canada but back in the 1970-80’s the Snap-on truck only carried a few of their own brand pliers. The specialty ones were Knipex.

I bought a pair of the little 5" Knipex to try to remove a rusted in screw from the end of an armature from a small electric motor. It's a difficult spot because there is a plastic end plate that are a little concave making it tough to get to flat. The little pliers seem to be the right size but won't lock when pressure is put on them. What am I doing wrong?
This screw is a blade type and I haven't stripped the slot yet.Ive been soaking it with PB Blaster then Fluid Film but it won't budge. I'm afraid to use heat on the armature so spent the $30 on the Knipex as a last resort but they aren't working like I thought they would,re: not locking.

won't lock.......do you mean lock like Vice-Grip pliers? They don't do that.

Is the screw head rounded or dome shaped designed to be driven with a straight blade or Phillips driver?

If so the Knipex will prob not work.

After soaking with penetrant I would use an impact driver.

The Knipex don’t grip on the end like the first picture very good. They do grip on the side much better than some of the cheaper pliers. Vice grips grip a lot better on the end. Or you could just cut the 1/4 bolt with the knipex mini cutters. Btw, my knipex were at home so I had to use a crappy pair of Channellocks the picture.

Right, they don't lock like Vice-Grips. But once you squeeze them where you want them, you can put all the pressure on the top handle, you don't have to squeeze the handles together like regular pliers while turning: Knipex Cobra Pliers - MADE IN GERMANY - YouTube

I tried the impact driver and vise grips before ordering the Knipex. The screw head is a slotted type and I've been very careful to not bugger up the head, even messed up the end of a cheaper screw driver. I'm kind of afraid that it is locked up due to electrolysis as the armature shaft is stainless,I think, and the screw is mild steel and pretty rusted and nasty looking.
The motor is from a spare pump for our koi pond and I would just buy a new one but they want an arm and leg for them. I had good luck replacing the bearings on my other pump. Maybe a deal will show up on C.L. before it goes bad again.

There’s a big difference in good and not good screw drivers. Using a good screw driver that’s the right size might be the ticket.

How bout flatting two sides and using an adjustable wrench while turning with a GOOD screwdriver? Not sure how much room you have for a helper's hands to be in the way.

There isn't room , and because it's in a slight dish and the head is so thin I couldn't get e good grip with an adjustable wrench. Also I have used a "good" screwdriver, the one I messed up was a cheapie though.The driver heads for my impact driver, which is over 40 yrs. old , are about as "good" as you can get and I widened the slot out to take the thicker of the heads.

That's what I'm thinking. I need to devise a way to get it rigged in my small milling machine to get a straight hole. I gave my drill press to a young friend who moved across the country and at my age I really don't want to invest in another. There is always a machine shop but I've always been a little hard headed and done my own tough work.
