Snow Equipment Owning/Operating Snow Blowing and Sleet

/ Snow Blowing and Sleet #21
Just finished my plowing, my wife took the day off so I didn't go outside till 10 AM.
Between 6-8 inches on the ground with about 2 inches of that a frozen sleet rain mix.
And of course now that I'm finished it's snowing again.

The snow mixed with rain in my town, the end result was 5 inches of something like wet concrete. It didn't want to feed through my blower, I ended up pushing it to the side with my loader mounted snow plow.

Indeed PITA storm...little over 7" here, and this coming Friday going to be nasty mess. :(

I was hitting my neighbor's drive with the snow blower and BANG! Well, I figured it was a shear pin...and, probably is. There was an old entryway rug (the thick kind) under the snow....now it's entangled in the auger and fan. I can see what I'll be doing this weekend.
The Frontier snow blower has, IIRC, two shear pins...one is on the PTO shaft and I think the other one is on the auger drive shaft. I'll look it up in the manual later.
Not sure how I'm going to get that rug out...but it surely ain't gonna be in one piece

My buddy just did the same thing, it was a chore getting that stupid rug out of there..

Yeah, I think that's going to be the hardest part

I managed to find a galvanized pail during the storm last week. It was in the back of a vehicle that needs to be hauled off for scrap, must have blown out during one of our windstorms. Luckily, I was about to change direction and already on the clutch so I caught it before it broke a sheer pin or stalled the machine.

Had to use a hammer and a railroad bar to remove it. Huge pain, can’t believe sheer pin didn’t break!

Yeah I have been watching the forecast too. I am close to the coast so it will probably be rain or wet mix here. I’m taking the blower off the tractor by third week in March because I need to rig for Apple spraying in April.

When we have to unplug a chopper or baler we will get a bar or wrench onto the pto or a drive shaft and rotate it backwards while removing bits and pieces.

Yeah, I'm planing to disconnect the PTO driveshaft and see if I can "back out" the rug...hope it works!

The worst part is that after spending hours of your time to untangle the rug, if you're like me, you'll feel compelled to buy your neighbor a new mat.

What drives me absolutely crazy are those bundled flyers under the snow. I've had a couple so tight under the impeller it took a day to pry the darn thing out....and course the install of a new shear pin. All for $20 revenue.

It snowed again Tuesday evening and turned warm. I plowed out my yard yesterday and the driveway and the mailbox. After all the new snow and warm wx I have around 14" on my lawn.

Years ago I picked up an old stray chunk of barbed wire with my 3-point blower. No blown shear pins - no notice of it until I got home. I tried to unwind it but it was just too much and too tight. Took after it with my cordless die grinder. I bet there was 50 feet wrapped up on the auger. Single strand all the way down the auger. Then a big, nasty bunch at the far end. I did that once with my Troy Bilt rototiller. The homesteader really like his barbed wire. It's the old kind too - heavy gauge wire with flat wire wound barbs.

I think I would have drug the cutting torch out for that mess.
That sounds like antique barbed wire, it is amazing the number of different barbed wire there was.
