I bumped into a 4" tree at less than walking speed with my 08 "HEAVY DUTY" Sierra and sustained $6000.00 in damage. What a flimsy piece of garbage! All that worthless chrome plated plastic bling, and the only chrome plated steel is the less than soup can thickness bumpers.

In 1986 I collided with a 1986 Jetta in my 1972 Jimmy. You could not find a scratch on the Jimmy, but the Jetta suffered $1900 damage (roughly $4500 today?).

When I was sixteen, I only had a learners permit but my Father insisted I pick him at at Toronto Airport, about twenty miles away. I got there OK but on the way back, you had to take these crazy unlit roads that they were always changing. I made a turn at the last minute and some guy eager to get around me drove into the back of our 72 Delta 88.

I was going to get out and apologise profusly, but my Dad took charge and basically did a Rodger Dangerfield, and asked, why did you run into the back of us, you scratched my trailer ball. There was not a mark on the Olds, but the foreign car was smashed and leaking coolant. I felt so bad I we left that guy sitting there with his wrecked car!

Rear bumpers? There's absolutely no support outside of the frame. I had to learn not to use snowbanks to unload my snowsled; all that you have to do is nudge one with the bumper corner and it bends, collapsing the rear fender. Supposedly it's to reduce the injuries of somebody who rearends you... an easier solution would be not to follow me so closely.

Yup, I nudged mine into a hard packed snow bank and paid the price. I managed to straighten out the bumper corners, but the parking sensor system has not worked since. But it's not just the metal bumpers. There is a host of plastic garbage back there held together with clips junkier than you might find on food packaging.

I think it's to make them cheap, but also to keep weight down for fuel economy.

A good little grocery getter. No worry about stray shopping carts either.

Here's a funny one...
Years ago a friend's uncle ordered a brand new Cadillac. He had it for about a week when it was involved in an accident. Not a big deal, but his uncle wanted it totaled. Luckily, his brother, my friends Dad drove a tow truck. So towing it home he's hitting trees, mailboxes, anything he could.
Next day the insurance adjuster comes out, checks it all over and said well...it was close...but we can fix it cheaper than replacing it!

I did the same. I bought a pipe bumper for my 09 1500. Bought a bed from the scrapyard, working on painting it.

I backed into the tree at about 2mph and got out thinking dang I done dented my bumper. And was like ********* I smashed my whole bedside!

Per: Ford F-150 Cab & bed leave chassis crash! - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum that truck was going around 100MPH (stolen, in a police chase) when the driver lost control spun around and hit a Camaro going ~50MPH in the other direction with the truck's rear bumper.
With a 150MPH closing speed and a rear end collision, I am not surprised.

I see the 2017 wheels that I have yet to install on our 2010 F-150 are not good for high speed crashes.

It is amazing how much safer all vehicles are today as shown in this extreme case of a PU made out of used beer cans. :)

I was rear ended when I was driving the Plymouth valiant sporting my homemade hitch...
ZERO damaged to my Plymouth... the Fiat was totaled... the hitch went thought the fiat radiator and collapsed/crumpled the Fiat...

Saw a documentary on the gas turbine cars of chrysler. I never knew! Don't suppose that Valiant was one of them. Seems like something you might have!

I was driving through Bangor hitting every light as it turned red, and watching the heating service van behind trying to force me to run them. I knew it was a matter of time before he hit me; sure enough, he did. I got out, saw there was no damage to my truck while a big pool of antifreeze formed under his. I said "I don't want to report this, do you?" When he said no I jumped into my truck and took off just as the light turned yellow. From the amount of antifreeze under his work van I doubt that he went very far before parking it or calling a wrecker.

Coolant leaks are often fixable.

Stupidity often isn't.

I remember reading that UPS pushes their drivers for something like 6 - 8 seconds of cushion. A soon as you try that timing (obviously not bumper/bumper rush hour...)...... it's a lot more distance than most people would guess.

Funny how a "while" ago, people knew how to make bumpers that absorbed low speed energy, and survived just fine.....

Model T Ford Forum: Will the bumper bracket fit with twin hasslers?

Guess we're too "smart" to understand that now.....

(More like they'd be too much of a drag on the economy.....)

But not smart enough for a "controlled flight into terrain) incident.:confused2:

I loved those energy absorbing bumpers on our 72 Delta 88.

High speed head on collision the Jimmy might fare better, but I doubt the passengers/driver would.

All the fancy stuff breaking up is one thing, but when it's serious you care more about the potential damage to humans.

The low-speed stuff is just a "Who Pays" deal, IMO.

Consumers loved that era of car bumper. Low speed ding, the shocks on the bumper cycled in/out, and you often didn't even have a scratch (actual chromed steel bumper, for younger readers ).

Modern bumpers - cheap, often unfinished raw metal impact bar, with something like styrofoam used, for a one-time event. They pass the standards, for one low-speed hit.

Vehicle manufacturers get to put out a marginally cheaper design; consumers get much higher repair bills for low-speed accidents.

On the truck side, I think these are a good idea for a rxer hitch, old or new.....

STOP Rear end Collision Damage & Reduce Whiplash Injury! SUPERBUMPER

I have a bookmark somewhere for a slighty different design..... but same idea, re-useable energy absorbing rxer add-on.
