I know this is a subject that has been discussed to death here. I just need to vent.

Two dogs running loose near my house. We are set on 18 acres. Mostly farm fields around us. Over on the other side of the highway (about a mile down the road ) is a neighborhood with 20 or so houses.

Two dogs running amuck. Called what little animal control we have in the county. Their advice was for me to catch them and then they would come pick them up.

We have horses on the property. The dogs have come on the property but not bothered the horses yet. I did remind animal control that I have the right to protect my livestock and that includes my dog.

You think that made any difference in their desire to come out and take care of the problem? Nope.

I guess next time it will be the true 3 s method.....

Dogs have no tags or collars on. They won稚 let me get close enough to take them into custody to see if they are chipped.

Sorry.... Rant over.

Unless the dogs are injured, the H.S. won't come out to try and catch them. Best case, open a fenced yard, lure the dogs in with food, close the gate behind them and hope they don't scale the fence. Call the H.S. and tell them you have them.

Does your county have an animal shelter? Maybe they would help catch them?

It's too bad. One dog is rarely a problem. But two take on an entirely different personality.

Some city people think they can move to the country and just let the dog out to exercise itself.

It's a joke here too. Much of the time they are not even available, so you have to leave a message. Good chance the dog catcher's family has lived there for six generations and you can bet if the offenders are friends or kin, then YOU will be the one deemed causing trouble.

Thirty six plus years out here and the only county employ - tax assessors. You are ABSOLUTELY right - The Man - you MUST protect your stuff. Hey - thirty minutes after we were out here in '82 - the coyotes knew there could be a meal - if they had the cojones. None have tried it yet - none have died trying either. Its a friendly recognition of "area of authority and responsibility".

We have 2 dogs running around my neighborhood and they have attacked my cats and others in the area. By the time we know that they are around it's to late and by the time I can get a way to get them gone they vanish. And there is no set pattern as to when they show up I have called animal control and said that they can set traps but other than that it is up to us and most of the neighbors don't care about what happens to them. As I said they vanish as fast as they appear. The only way we know that they are here is my dog barking and it also chases them away hopefully one of these days I can corner them and be done with them.

One thing I have found when trying to report something to county agency is after telling them my complaint I will ask their name, position and badge number, ect.
I have had them ask why do you need that?
I tell them "for my records". I seem to get a better response.

I had a similar situation, but with loose cats.. I still remember my 8 year old nephew going out to feed his very nice, and tame duck, and running in crying because a cat chewed the head off it, just for fun.. it didn't eat anything.. people think that cats should be let outside to kill things.. we would capture those cats in a trap, and relocate them 20 miles away, for months after that happened.. in my area, dogs are kept out with a fence..

Easy to say, and we do that when possible, but with encroaching development (houses) on all sides there is not always a clear shot and not always time to deal with a dead calf a 3 AM.

I'm certain not going to get into a big disagreement on how predators should be handled. Two years ago the neighbor had a "hired gun" kill 27 coyotes. Didn't seem to make the slightest difference in the local populations. Me out here on my 80 acres - I'm completely surrounded by several bands of coyotes. Always have been - always will be. I enjoy listening to them in the evening. Them and all the other creatures that go bump in the night.

I just leave them alone and they don't bother me one bit. Kind of wish they would come in a little closer, at night, and get some of the pocket gophers.

You - out east there atsah- feel, for some reason, that they must be killed. That's OK with me - that is totally your choice.
