Good (barely) Morning!!!! 87F @ 11:15AM. Partly cloudy. Areas of smoke and haze are possible, reducing visibility at times. High near 100F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph.
Kyle, my neighbors needed help with tending chickens a few years ago, so I volunteered to feed and water them for a few days. They had a big rooster named Rusty, and he was a mean one. As soon as I'd open the gate to the coop, he'd charge me and either try to peck or kick me. And he'd often jump up to chest high to do it. I quickly learned to grab a metal garbage can lid and use it as a shield to herd him into a closed in corner formed by the gate as it opened into the pen. Then I'd do my feeding and watering, and quickly close the gate and get the heck out of there. Some time after that, Rusty made the mistake of jumping Scott, my neighbor. Rusty got the boot, breaking his leg, and soon after that his neck was wrung. Marie, the neighbor's wife, wasn't happy at all, as she could cuddle Rusty in her arms and they were quite good friends. But I'm glad Rusty's not around anymore, because when they'd free range him, I'd always be looking over my shoulder for him.
You folks were sure prolific yesterday. Four pages of posts!
The Carr fire doubled in size again yesterday, growing from 40,000 acres to 80,000. Whiskeytown lake is completely surrounded by fire, and the little town of Igo has been over run. Firefighters have been able to hold the eastern border on the west side of Redding, but all it would take is a wind shift for that to change. With no relief in sight with respect to the temperatures and wind, and several new fires in the area competing for already scarce resources, there's a lot of hoping and praying going on in the North State.

Managed to get the transmission opened up and all the gears and shafts out yesterday. Took a lot of heat for the bearings to release from the case, and when everything was out the garage was pretty warm. It was gittin' toward supper time anyway, so that was it for the day. Today I'll get the cases cleaned, then seal up the various holes and put the cover back on before it gets a trip through the bead blaster. Then maybe get the shafts and gears back in so it can cool off overnight for tomorrow. The video tutorial has been great; a modern version of "monkey see, monkey do".
Hope everyone enjoys their weekend...
