Good evening all. 80F this morning, high thin clouds, calm wind. Moderate wind today, mostly clear sky, high temp 114F. Chapel this morning, did little light weeding on flower garden, Choir sang at a memorial service this afternoon. That is it for today. Forecast is for temps to be cooler for a while, may even drop into upper 90'sF.
Prayers for all.

What is your food recipe? Water, sugar? How much? Anything else?

I read in a book about hummingbirds that the correct mixture is one cup white sugar to one quart of water. I keep eight half gallon milk jugs to make up a batch, one jug at a time just using room temperature tap water. I pour the sugar into all the jugs first when my hands are dry, then fill each of them with water leaving space at the top for a bubble. Once they're capped, they get shaken for a few seconds and I go onto the next one. A bottle takes three shakes to get all the sugar dissolved. The solution will keep quite a while in the fridge, but this time of year a batch will only last about a week. That same book said that the red dye and other additives in commercial nectar mixes are bad for the birds, and that plain old white sugar and water is as close as you can get to the natural nectar the birds like. I keep an eye on the jugs as they are emptied, as mold will sometimes form inside them. A cap full of bleach in a full bottle of water will clean out the mold overnight. The feeding part is pretty easy, but I haven't figured out how to keep the birds from trying to kill each other yet. I thought having feeders at each corner of the house would keep things civil, but they seem to want to all gang up on one feeder and fight for it...

Thank you Sir. I’d heard the same about the red coloring.

I’m going to order one of your suggested feeders and see what happens.

I appreciate your advice.

69 right now and raining...not hard, just a nice steady soaking which we needed badly. High in the mid-70's. 10 day forecast is calling for rain most of the week.

Heading to Indianapolis tomorrow...not sure if I'll be posting much over the next few days...

I have been here in NM since '92. The first few years were green, had above average rain and snowfall. It has been progressively getting drier and drier. We have decided it is time it is time to seek a "less harsh environment". It seems that many other areas are to the opposite extreme....too much rain, too quickly (flooding), massive forest fires, tornadoes (in multiples), or blizzards /massive snows. Is there any weather stable areas? Somebody really p****d off Mother Nature....

We live in a place where the weather often changes, but the lows and highs are not so extreme. We're thinking this is a long hot summer - a whole month with highs of a whopping 27C/80F :)

12" of snow is a rarity here (never heard of people owning snowblowers until I came on TBN) and I've never seen a tornado, or more than 2" of rain in a day. Would that be ok for you ? Could be quite a journey for you to get to work though. :D

I was about to say what a lovely day it is. That was until ...

Maybe we resolve with a Thomas vs. Randy Beauty Contest?

I知 ready!

Thomas and Randy wearing high heals
What a thought to start the week. Anyone else now not feel like breakfast this morning ?

Wngsprd, well done at getting your bike back into use. Coco must be thrilled at the prospect of some high speed adventures together.

Actually since it was the first time she saw me move that fast, she took several steps backwards toward my wife. I don't think the bike is very safe...one gear working and only the front brakes. I'll spend more time on it, though.

Thought I could get started outside early this morning, but the radar shows the rain gets the worm.

73 going to 83 and rain imminent. Lucked by with only .02 yesterday, so got some drying, but several inches predicted this week.

RNG - I like you method for making hummingbird "juice." We use that same 1:4 ratio of sugar to water, and no dye. But we heat our water (1 gallon at a time) to boil before stirring in the sugar. We use that same feeder, but instead of yellow "flowers" with holes, ours have only slits...we found that this keeps the yellow jackets from crawling inside, which they love to do...and they can get into very small holes.
