Diesel vs gas

Well naturally, the diesel application would only need 1/2 the displacement (3.0), with 14.7 lbs of boost to get the same rated HP. With again, far less fuel to do the same job.

The law of physics, is the law of physics...can't change those. Duty cycles or load factors, what ever you want to call it, always has the diesel with the advantage when all aspects of power are looked at.

Check the fuel efficiency of a diesel at 25% and 50% vs an equal gasser at 25% and 50% power .

Hi B&D - i have diesel engines from all likes of decades - turbo/non turbo - 1959, 1963, 1996, 1997, 2003 and 2006, 2018 3 cyl to v8, straight mechanical injection pump to HEUI - EFI some of the diesels, intercoolers vs non, maybe you have heard of some of them, IH, Shibaura, Perkins, Navistar, Yanmar - there are tons of differences in engines i will agree but the simple question/answer still applies a diesel will work less and produce similar power to perform the same job and uses less fuel. They have had to create hybrids to get the mileage out of gassers that a diesel can produce pushing the same weight or more down the highway........how many gas tractors do they produce today? Hmmmm i wonder why? and diesel is more expensive than gas per gallon, no say it isn't so!!!! .....why don't they make engines in 18 wheelers gas? thanks for the alarm clock - regards..... RVW

Modern gasoline engines can have torque curves that shame a diesel's. It's just that that technology goes into Porsches, not Kubotas.

There’s a big difference in duty cycle. The Porsche will melt pretty soon. The Kubota could make the rated power oil change to the next oil change assuming fuel was continuous.

Why don't you back your assertion up with some data, you're making the claim. Prove yourself right...

Small diesel engine use has increased not decreased over the last 30 years.

Diesel fuel is higher than gas. Initial cost of diesel engines are higher than gas. Repair costs are higher than gas.

So why has diesel engine use increased?

So why has diesel engine use increased?

Because manly men want them.

Why have pickups gotten so ridiculously large? Why have SUVs taken over car sales? Why is Ford ending car production? Why do people order small tractors with R4 "industrial" tires?

Because manly men want them.

Plain and simple. Marketing.

I'll post this link again to the gas VS diesel break even calculator for RVs. It'll work the same for trucks. Plug in your personal numbers, current fuel prices, DEF costs, etc.... and hit calculate. It'll tell you how many miles you have to drive to break even. It's an eye opener. Plug 'em in and post your results.

that's awesome, ive paid for my diesel 3.5 times now - i wonder how much ive saved if i calculated on all my tractors and skid steer and mower -

That's interesting, as most folks have to put about 400,000 on a vehicle to pay for the diesel option just once.

Maybe you are that easily influenced by marketing. I am not. :)

I have 6 diesels, 3 gas. The gassers weren't offered with diesel. Marketing never entered in the decisions.

Gas vs Diesel A Calculator and My Thoughts[/QUOTE

I plugged in my SD diesel. Broke even at 60K miles. Since I'm now at 240K it's wayyyyy ahead. In that time I've never saw 3K rpms. Low engine speed and easy pullin. :)

Obviously not most people on this thread. :)

i put in my AVERAGE on my truck which is 15 - i get 18plus on hwy - i get 16plus running around locally and 12 pulling loads at the least if i mind my foot - the last F250 gasser i had got 12.5 on hwy, 10 running around and 6 to 7 towing the same things i am towing with my diesel and those weights/mileages.

My diesel does not use def - so calculated that at .0000001 and 10K miles since you have to put in something

so i plugged in 15 for the diesel at 3.00/gal and the gasser at 10 and 2.65/gal which is about where we are right now - my engine was 5K extra at purchase and i currently have 285K on my truck - with those numbers its at 77K to break even, i rounded up to 80K so pretty much around 3.5 times give or take on my situation
