Hello Radios1,

I subscribe to "Farm Show" as well, the problem is we are looking at our keyboards and offering our advise and council with our years of combined experience for what he is describing.

Having the simplicity of a mid mount PTO with a single stage snow thrower like the Reist Series 1000 in a wider width(5 feet) as long as it does not have a leaking seal and the drive lines and carrier bearings are greased will last a very long time as long as it it maintained. A mid point PTO seal leak requires the transmission to be drained completely to allow the seal and seal housing to be removed and replaced.

He has to have the ability to spread grit at the same time he clears the road of snow and having a rear mounted pendulum spreader like the Vicon gives him the most flexibility to do this.

He has to obtain 90 day quote for the repair and installation of the mid mount PTO and the carrier bearing and drive shaft.

Both Pronovost and Riest can provide front mount hitches for snow blowers and he has to decide whether he wants a three point hitch mount from Pronovost to carry the snow blower or a simpler system for the Rieset series 1000 single stage unit.

The Riest series 1000 single stage snow thrower will have plenty of torque and power as the snow blower rotor is 13 inches in diameter and it is much much simpler than a 2 stage snow caster as it does not have a impeller fan.

The Riest series 1000 single stage snow thrower operates between 600-700 RPM with the chain driven rotor just like the older single stage snow throwers on lawn tractors.

The mid point PTO on his mule will most likely run at 2,200 RPM at high idle and the prpeller shaft will operate at that speed through the carrier bearing and then the universal joint(s) which are attached to the 1/1 right angle gearbox which then transmits the power delivered from the Mid PTO to a cross shaft that rotates a smaller roller chain sprocket that is connected to the larger single tooth sprocket attached to the snow blower rotor.

It all comes back to the servicing dealer and the quality of work that they do and how well they follw the instructions on a different implement installation like a front mounted single stage snow thrower driven by the mid point PTO.

IN SAYING THAT using an propeller shaft driven front mounted snow thrower like the Riest series 1000 in a 5 foot width
will be simpler as the spreader can be left on the three point hitch all winter as long as its left empty and covered with a tarpaulin or the vicon hopper cover until it is needed to spread grit if it is left out side with the mule.

any idea what happens when you hit a rock with that, and the auger has frozen to the driven shaft?.. new snow blower transmission needed?.. I never liked the idea of shear bolts..

I am going to either trade my 790 in on a 2520 with snowblower or try sell it and buy the 2520. The 790 has been great and is set up for firewood with a 3PT log lift with hydraulic thumb but if I cannot sell the 790 for a fair price I will keep it and buy an inverted Meteor pull behind 68" snowblower. I just listed it on CL this am.

Thanks

What happens:

The 60 roller chain on the left side of the snow thrower that rotates the snow blower rotor simply breaks and you have to replace it entirely. Removing the pin that holds the access door on the left side shut allows you to have full access to the drive and driven sprockets to remove the broken drive chain and install the new one.

Having a roller chain tensioner and a roller chain breaker for #60 size chain and a box of #60 chain and a box of #60 master links handy is all you need.

Simple with no other work needed.

The only change I would make is to have #60H chain and sprockets as they are stronger and you can use one long cotter key to save on time and fussing whenever you break a chain if the cotter pin holes are lined up in a straight line and you will have less work in bending one long cotter pin than two small ones to get the snow thrower back in service.

The new rubber shoes for the front alone would be close to $700.00 so its not worth that much for sure.

The rear shoes must have been in even worse shape than the front shoes!

ok, I guess that wouldn't be bad, needing to do that a few times a day then.. not having to do that at all would be better though..

Hello Radios1,

I would never spend good money on a hydraulic drive snow blower when the single stage unit would cost less than 7K plus tax with the extended chute and #60H chain, sprockets, hydraulic rotation using a hydraulic cylinder, hydraulic spout control and spot lights on the chute.

if a hydraulic system was chosen it would need 2 very long number 12(3/4") or 16(1") hydraulic hoses and they would be close to $600.00+, plus the 4 quick connect hydraulic fittings which would be over $100.00 a pair plus the loom clamps to secure the hoses and the fitting caps for the hoses to the tractor frame plus the hose protecting wrap.

A hydraulic power pack would also require a cooling fan system for the oil as a high volume gear pump and gear motor 30-35 gallons per minute will be needed for the application.

the guy on the farm show link I posted did it for under $1000 and used a 40 gallon tank to avoid needing cooling fans. using the hydraulic motor, he can lift the blower all the way up without having to worry about the driveshaft..

Yep, if you buy from Surplus Center you can get a 20' 1" hose with NPT ends for $135: 1" x 24" 1 NPTM x 1 NPTM SAE 1R17 Hydraulic Hose Assembly 3 PSI | Hydraulic Hose Assemblies | Hydraulic Hose and Hose Assemblies | Hydraulics | www.surpluscenter.com They also have a 25' 1" line for not a whole lot more.
A set of flush face quick connect couplings through them are $90: 1" NPT Flush Face Quick Coupler Set ISO 1628 | Quick Coupler Pairs | Hydraulic Quick Couplers | Hydraulics | www.surpluscenter.com
A set of wing nut (semi truck type) quick connects are $57ish: 1" Brass Wing-Nut Quick Coupler Pair | Quick Coupler Pairs | Hydraulic Quick Couplers | Hydraulics | www.surpluscenter.com
Prices are much better when you can pre-plan and not have to run down to buy from Napa (or similar).

I put a Bervac Blizzard B54 (54") snowblower on the back of a 23hp Montana tractor. Love the blower. Works flawlessly. No issues. I got the hydraulic shoot adjustment since the tractor had the auxiliary valve on the rear. 9 New England winters with no issues

wait till you get a 4 foot snowfall.. even less, how are your front tires rotating if the snow is half the diameter of your tires, interesting, on my tractor, they just dig into the snow, and create a pile of snow that makes it impossible to move.. maybe you have 4WD or chains on the front wheels?.. what's a Montana Tractor?..

Generally, with a rear snowblower one backs into the snow and blows it out of the way, then drives over bare ground (or close to it).
Montana was a brand of tractor, if beef had the Montana T2334, it had a Mitsubishi S3L 3 cylinder diesel engine on it.

This weekend was the first time using our blower. I ended up getting the 6' option as there was an ex-demo on offer. We just had something between 6" and 9" over the last couple of days, mostly on Friday night. Normally we wouldn't clear that sort of fall as both cars would manage the track OK, however driving through it does make a mess. Also I wanted to try the blower. Depth on the track varied from around 3" to about 18" depending the lie of the land.

So what I've found so far. Using normal Low reverse, a speed of 0.85mph, seems to work for almost everything. On occasions I the snow wasn't quite clearing fast enough, or in some cases the engine was labouring, in these cases I could lift the blower up a few inches and continue like that. When we get deeper snow I'll try the creeper gears as another option. In some cases, for example going back where I'm just cleaning up, I could go in reverse H at just under 4 mph, although that was a little fast. I'm also considering the option of putting the PTO into 1000 instead of 540, and running in H reverse at around 1,200 rpm. That would give a ground speed of around 2mph any might be a good compromise where I don't need full power.

I can sit sideways so I not looking right over my shoulder, and I can sit either way as well. It's something I did worry about a little but I think it's going to be OK.

I can and do sit sideways and looking rearward for hours at a time running pull type forage choppers and haybines so a couple of hours with a backblade or such isn't bad.
Beautiful country, looking at the rolling hills and farms my first thoughts wouldn't have been Scotland.

I think this was made for tractors with a swivel seat, and dual controls though..

See my post #29 photo of a BX22 Kubota with a front mounted blower driven from the rear pto.

This is what things look lke on the rear of the reactor.

This is the same gear box setup on my 1979 JD 850 it runs a 66” snow blower on the front I believe it has 22 hp at PTO it does well for me.
