My JD 5105 front end loader suddenly started "stuttering" while being raised. The 3-pt hitch is also doing it. The hydraulic reservoir is full. However, the hydraulic fluid has never been changed. Could that be the cause? Why so sudden? Hydraulic pump???

change your fluid and filters then diagnose from there

OK. Everything going fine, almost. I drained the hydraulic fluid and changed the big canister filter. Now I'm fighting with the sump screen. It just pulls out, right? I am afraid to grab it with pliers and mess up the outer rubber seal. Any tricks?

I am not familiar with your Deere, but on other JDs, the inlet filter screen just pulls out, yes. It may
be resisting cuz there are debris on the outside of it. If you can open the rear of your case by pulling
off the PTO plate, that will help to clear out the sump. I have seen a lot of crap collected inside tractor
sumps. If your inlet screen DOES have a lot of debris on it, you should clean out the sump anyway.

Your symptoms are classic oil starvation symptoms. I get those if I drive up a really steep hill while
trying to operate my FEL.

How many hours on your unit?

You're right. It just pulled out. Just required excessive force.

The tractor is old. I bought it around 2001 I think. BUT ONLY 19X hours. Yes that's 3 digits, slightly less than 200 hours. I'm new to this forum (any forum). Did the picture go through?

That is what I expected. Your photo is clear. IMO, you must clean your sump. It is gonna
be ugly.

Yes. I had a couple of old partial gallon bottles of hydraulic fluid in the shed. I flushed those through. I'm planning on doing the whole exercise again next year mostly just so I can get a look at that screen. I wish I could pull the screen without draining all 9 gallons of fluid.

I will never believe that tractor has less than 200 hours with crap like that on the filter. It looks like a big turd. I changed mine at 400 hours and all I can see is a couple little specks maybe 1/8" size.

Now that you flushed and changed your filter and fluid it may take a couple changings to get clear. Oil is a lot cheaper than having tranny problems.

Hmm. Deere Dude provides an interesting data point. About a year ago the bucket cylinders started leaking due to seal dry rot. I pulled them off and took them to a hydraulic shop to be rebuilt. I wonder if rain got in there in the interim. Although it only has 200 hours on it, it is 17 years old.

Welcome to the forum!

:tractor: I'm going to move this thread over to our John Deere section.

Yeah, low hours, but.....17yo, sleeps outside, probably. Rain. ==> water in the sump.

How are your shifter boots? I am not sure they are a problem for this model, but for my 2030, cracked boots will let water into the trans.

Bringing up an old thread and the issue i am have is after using the tractor for an hour or so the bucket dump feature stutters and power steering chatters abit.
The hydraulic oil , filter was changed about 80hrs ago and the screen cleared up back then. The only addition was the artillian diverter for grapple about 6 hrs ago.

Thoughts?

Not clear if the problem was noticed after the diverter addition. Can you clue us in ??

It worked fine after the diverter was added for 5-6 hrs and this just started in the last couple of days.

I’d check connections on the diverter , could be air getting in the system

Good tip, I did change an O ring on one of the quick connects as it was leaking.. I will check it again.

So I rechecked all connections and cleaned them up and it seems the chatter returns about an hr or so after the use. Could it be heat related? or do I have a failing pump?

What kind of fluid did you use. JD makes a low viscosity hydraulic fluid and a “regular” one. I read on another forum where someone was having problems and they switched to the thicker fluid and it fixed it.

That low of hours it’s possible the pump is bad but not likely. I’m not sure what your tractor looks like but with mine you remove a short hose to pull the suction screen. On mine it’s hard to get the hose out of the way. This hose is known to crack and suck air. Could still be water or contaminated fluid also. I’m just guessing at this point but my gut reaction is your getting air in the system somehow.
