DPF

anyone who claims not to have a DPF has a DOC.. which is 90% the same. Its a DPF that does not burn. It meets its particular mater (PM) requirement by running the engine extra hot so the exhaust stream is cleaner. It also uses EGR (exhaust gas recirc) to reburn the exhaust, which DPF does not need to do.

kinda drives me nuts, as companies use the burn cycle to strike fear into those shopping with a tractor. I sell both styles of emissions system, we don't have more or less trouble with any certain type. Key thing is the operator understanding the system.

Thanks Neil.

Just to confirm, DPF machines such as my L3901 have no EGR?

correct. No EGR needed because the DPF does the scrub. DOC uses a combination of EGR and base-line heat.

Thanks for the info. It has been my experience that EGR on a diesel has been cause for much of the problems with the tier 4 standard.

The biggest problem with DPF has been too cold of T-stats in northern climates. The field repair has been to install warmer T-stats and then things work as expected. On the other hand, most vehicles could use a warmer T-stat in northern climates.

Makes sense.

Think they are expecting global warming, hence the cooler T-stats. Getting ahead of the rush !!!

Yea, I'd agree that we've seen more problems from EGR and Common Rail than we've really seen from a DPF.

The biggest problem with repairs is the software firewall so that individuals and independent shops cannot service something as dumb as replacing an injector for lack of the ability to program the thing without going to the dealer. Here the EPA mandated this technology, but long after the warranty expires, customers are expected to continue to bring their equipment to the dealer. For this reason the right to repair movement has busted out of electronics and into heavy equipment and farming. When this artice was written only eight states had pending right to repair legislation, but now 18 states have pending right to repair legislation.

I'm a garage tinker myself and a supporter for right to repair, but I'm a bit annoyed to see the criticism leveled at the dealer & manufacturer. This is an issue that needs addressed with the EPA. Everyone is just doing what they have laid out.

Both Federal and state laws must be changed in order to support the right to repair.
