Tractor
Looking to purchase
Good Day!
I am looking at getting a tractor.

What will I be using the tractor for:
Clearing land, so pulling logs, mowing brush and building road
Plowing snow
Digging post holes
Cleaning junk out of the creek
Digging irrigation supply lines
Loading and spreading compost, soil, rock and gravel
Among other things that you need a tractor for when living in the country, gardening and caring for animals.

Suggestions and recommendations will be most appreciated.

I have gone to several different dealerships and each one has given me different information, suggestions and prices.

Please help, all this is really giving me a headache.

Business associates say that you should never pay retail prices or MSRP prices. Other places have told me that I should expect to get at least 15% off retail and could reasonably ask the sales person for 25% off retail.

Suggestions and recommendations will be most appreciated.

Most of the tractor sellers, John Deere, Kubota, Kioto, Manhidra, TYM, etc have a build you tractor site. Go to your favorite tractor color sites and build a tractor then take 15% of the build price and use that as your negotiating price.

Re: Quest for Wisdom -

Look for an approximate tractor from a dealer you like. You can't know what the exact tractor needed will be until you have used a tractor for your jobs for a while. Then you'll have developed your tractor skills and will know what capabilities you need and don't need.

Your first one may be the right one, if you are lucky. :)

Really first place is what is your budget? That includes the tractor, grapple, post hole digger, rear blades, box blades... and possible winch - What is the lay of the land, flat and accessible?

Have you used tractors before? Are you mechanically incline? How much land are we talking about? a couple acres?

Re: Quest for Wisdom -

The best way to shop for tractors is to list your tasks first, then determine how much bare tractor weight you need to SAFELY accomplish your tasks. Bare tractor weight is a tractor specification easily found in sales brochures and web sites, readily comparable across tractor brands and tractor models.

For most tractor tasks greater chassis weight is more important than tractor horsepower. This tractor fundamental is difficult for people new to tractors to comprehend. It takes a 50% increase in bare tractor weight before you notice a significant tractor capability increase. It takes a 100% increase in bare tractor weight to elicit MY-OH-MY!

Heavier tractors have more tractive power pulling ground contact implements. Greater mass of heavy-chassis tractors increases tractor stability when transporting loads in the FEL bucket, the most rollover prone of routine tractor tasks. Heavier tractors have larger wheels and tires better able to bridge holes, ruts and downed tree limbs, yielding a smoother, less disturbing passage over rough ground.

Safe hillside operation demands more tractor weight than flat land operation. Heavier tractors have wider wheel spreads making heavier tractors less laterally unstable. Rear wheel spreads may be decreased or increased after jacking up the rear.

Shop your weight range within tractor brands. Budget will eliminate some choices. Collect a dealer brochure for each tractor model in your weight range. I spreadsheet tractor and implement specs, often a revealing exercise. I have a column for cost per pound.

Tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight are offered in one configuration. Most, such as the high volume kubota standard L series, are sparely equipped to hit competitive price points. Others, such as the Yanmar YT235 and Kubota B2650/B3350 series, include enhanced productivity and comfort components.

Most tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight are operated in residential applications on one to five fairly flat acres. These "residential tractors" fit in a typical garage.

Tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are generally offered in a utilitarian configuration and a deluxe configuration, on a common chassis. Deluxe kit enhances productivity and operating comfort ~~~ but you have to pay. Many tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are too tall to fit in a typical garage, even with ROPS folded.

Selling a used tractor is easy. Selling light implements in order to buy heavier, wider, implements for a heavier tractor you take a hit in depreciation. Passing time with multiple browsers is a pain. ((Ask me how I know.))

For most new to tractors a quality dealer, reasonably close, available for coaching, is important. Dealer proximity is less important to others, well experienced with tractors, who perform their own maintenance. My kubota dealer is six miles away. I feel my local dealer continues to add value to my equipment.

Horsepower is only a primary consideration operating PTO powered implements.

BUY ENOUGH TRACTOR.

Re: Quest for Wisdom -

I am considering a tractor.

I have gone to several different dealerships and each one has given me different information, suggestions and prices.

Until you settle on a bare tractor weight, you will not be comparing apples-to-apples at different tractor dealerships.

I live out in the country on 20 acreages. I farm small fruit and have a large greenhouse for growing vegetables. Also, have a variety of animals.

My land is mountainous, so there are nearly no level spots. Absolutely have to have four wheel drive to get anywhere or do anything even on a dry summer day.

I need a tractor that is small enough to fit in tight spaces and powerful enough to pull logs, move large rocks and unload pallets off of trucks.

Budget wise I would like to stay under $30,000

Merged the two similar threads together, and moved to the general buying/pricing/comparisons forum. Please continue the discussions.

And you shouldn't think about weight until you decide what tasks you want to do.

So how tight of a space, 5', 6' or seven feet (or smaller ) Also, the biggest deal (deciding factor) is how heavy are the Pallets!!! That will dictate a bunch of the rest of the stuff.

How much do your "large" rocks weigh?

Do you need to move round hay bales, which can weight from 700 to 1,600 pounds?

What is the total weight of pallets you need to unload from trucks?

How long will the road be?
How much rain do you have annually in Spokane?

Have you had experience operating a Three Point Hitch tractor?

FEED US HARD DATA WE CAN WORK WITH.

The pallets are between 500 to 2500 pounds.

I went by a Kubota dealership and looked at the size of the tractors. Most any size would be fine, the larger tractors would just require me to make some changes around the property.

Also, I was just driving a neighbors tractor with a snow blower on it. It was not heavy enough to keep the tractor from getting stuck. Ended up just using a walk behind snowblower. So the weight of the tractor is definitely something I will be thinking more about.

RE: Rocks, I have no idea how much rocks weight. There are many rocks that just one rock would fill the entire loader bucket. How much would that weight, I have no clue.

The first road will be about 3000 feet. Total after all is done, I will have about a mile of my own road to maintenance.

How much rain? I'm not really sure what that has to do with tractors. However, my location gets a bit more precipitation that does the average Spokane area. Reason being is most of my property is on two sides of a mountain with a large stream running through it. Last winter there was about eight feet of snow total. Spring is difficult because there is flooding some years, and lots of mud. During the summer it is fairly dry. That is why I have to irrigate. So, need to be able to move large amounts of snow in the winter.

Yes, I do move hay. However I just hate those round bales. I know that many of my neighbors like them, but they also have 12000 head of cattle. When you have a few sheep, horse and a cow or two, those big bales are a pain in the butt. So I only use small bales of hay that a person can pick up.

The HST transmission honestly frighten me. I envision lots of expense because of repair and maintenance. For my trucks I choose to only use manual transmissions. Every pickup I have had with an automatic transmission, I have had to replace and repair the transmission, transfer case etc. I would appreciate comments and suggestions, thoughts by anyone with experience with the different transmissions.

Yes, I have a bit if experience running smaller tractors. Yes, I can fix my own stuff but, just am running out of time. Got so much stuff around here that needs to be repaired, I could spend a few years just fixing stuff. 20 acres

Lifting 2500 pound pallets takes no slouch of a tractor. I don't like tractors that big. They're made for field work and aren't good for general maintenance or loader work at least IMO. A 4000 pound base tractor seems in line with most of your work IMO. HST transmissions have proved to be fairly reliable. Sure there's some junk skid steers laying around with bad drive motors, but they're usually old machines that were worn out anyway. You don't usually see shiny new machine with tons of life left with junked transmissions.

I think the lower limit on the tractor will be set by the need to safely handle 2500lb pallet loads. I'm guessing you will need near 3500lb loader lift capacity for the fork weight plus the pallets, with a safety margin.
