Open carry / firearm handy

Good thing about the USA most places you can carry if you want, Just don't tell us that we can't (carry) and most of us will be good with it. For all the gun haters out there just look at Chicago and tell me how Gun Control is working out there. Just saying I have never seen a gun go off all by its self.

I'll keep that in mind next time I'm driving my tractor through the streets of Chicago. I can see it now, blasting away from the seat of the tractor as I sit there, out in the open, and traveling at 3 MPH. Might be a bit distracting as I also have to glance back at the box scraper occasionally.

I live in the country and frequently bushhog or do other tractor work 1/4 to 1/2 mike from my house. I generally carry a revolver with me. I don稚 live in a crime ridden area but there are problems from time to time with break ins and recently there have been some brutal robberies in our county. Some elderly folks were pistol whipped and beaten in their homes and a worker at a welcome station a few miles from my house was severely beaten. All of these were done by the same person. Thankfully they caught him. Recently my Dads weekend home was broken into. The Sherriff痴 office were great and wound up catching the guy. You can call me paranoid or whatever you want I don稚 care. I am not looking for trouble and by carrying a gun am not escalating anything. I am merely protecting myself. The last thing I want is to ever use a gun on someone but I also do not want to be in a situation where someone confronts me and I am helpless. You might be surprised how many people ride around rural areas
looking for an easy mark. Most of the crimes are drug related and are getting more frequent. When you have been broken into or had things stolen.

Not paranoid at all. I call it good sense.

I always carry a charter arms .44 special. At dusk and dawn the coyote packs can be unnerving when they get bold.

Case in point: One of my co-workers had coyote pack attempting to kill cattle/calf the other night. Lucky for calf, he heard the chaos, and was able to intervene, one less coyote, thanks to a 7mm mag close at hand in the house. Not exactly an example of open carry, but definitely keep one handy... calf had teeth marks on it.

You shouldn't carry because you are looking for thugs, you shouldn't carry because you expect to be mugged, you shouldn't carry just to dispatch critters, you should carry for the simple fact that if you need it, you likely don't have time to go get it. If you get into a mindset where anyone that turns into your driveway is up to no good, that is called paranoid (sorry the word seems to be disliked so much). Most people are good people and don't need "confronted".

You call it paranoid. Most call it prepared. How do you know the "most good people" from the few bad when they enter your property? Once they enter the property and you determine they are not simply lost and are in fact bad people then it's too late to prepare.

Friend of mine was riding his motorcycle in a neighboring state. He carries in his saddle bags. Pulls into a nice, well lit, station and is filling up. Two very friendly, smiling, guys approach and start talking about his bike. His upgrades. How it rides, etc. He thinks these are two nice guys that don't need to be confronted. Until one says "I sure would like to ride that bike, how about it". My buddy says I don't loan my bike out. The guy says "It isn't a loan and I'm not asking". As they walk closer he pulls his gun from the saddlebag and points it straight at the two. They turn around, jump in the truck and haul ***.

What was at stake? Losing his bike? Getting beat up? Getting killed? - I have no idea and neither did he. He is a humble, easy to get along with guy who sees the good in most people and isn't paranoid. He isn't stupid either.

Surprised he had time to pull from his saddle bag.

I'd call it paranoid if he confronted them for no other reason than wanting to discuss his bike. When they said they "wanted a ride and weren't asking", their intentions were known and it was time to be confrontational. Nothing paranoid about that.

Read what I said; "you should carry for the simple fact that if you need it, you likely don't have time to go get it"... That is being prepared.

My entire point is this: If you have a "reason" other than being prepared, you are paranoid. Too many things can happen in this world to set around and cite "reasons" for carrying. Once you start listing "reasons" beyond simply "being prepared", you are limiting your preparedness. Focusing on hypothetical reasons honestly does nobody any good at all. Each situation needs dealt with as best as possible, and a gun is always the last resort. There are no "silver bullet" solutions that fix-all...

If you carry so you can confront everyone that turns up your driveway or chase away anyone that speaks to you in public, you are paranoid and in my opinion; don't have any business with a firearm. The 'shoot first and ask questions later' mentality is a good way to make yourself known on the national news in a bad way.

Carry a firearm for the same reason you would carry a pocketknife, a flashlight, or an umbrella; simply "just in case". Chances are the situation you need it in will not be one you expect to need it in. The day you don't take your umbrella will be the day it unexpectedly rains, or the day you don't have a flashlight handy will be when the power goes out or you drop something in the dark.

No matter what situation you expect to happen, it will nearly always be the unexpected you need to be prepared for. Get on with living life and quit worrying about what might happen. Life is a wonderful thing and should be enjoyed, just be prepared.

Here's something quite valid for this thread from the "favorite quotes" thread:
"Those that go looking for trouble generally end up finding it..."

on a tangent, but relevant item:
your thoughts. either yes or no. i remain neutral in this forum on this topic. just interested:

is Kansas congressional hopeful Tyler Tannahill's giveaway of an AR 15 ( to coincide w/Kansas Republican convention) appropriate or not at this time given the florida school shooting?
maybe just yes or no before your explanation. interested in your response
best regards to you all...

also please educate me. can gun raffle recipients receive a firearm w/o a background check?
do they even have to be registered voters or have a permanent address?
please note, just a question & not an opinion, thx
