Open carry / firearm handy

I have no problem with anyone carrying anytime, I think they should. My only point is people try to point out various situations as their reason they carry, which I find to be a rather narrow view. You shouldn't carry because you are looking for thugs, you shouldn't carry because you expect to be mugged, you shouldn't carry just to dispatch critters, you should carry for the simple fact that if you need it, you likely don't have time to go get it. If you get into a mindset where anyone that turns into your driveway is up to no good, that is called paranoid (sorry the word seems to be disliked so much). Most people are good people and don't need "confronted".

I pretty much carry 24/7/365 unless there is a reason not to (as in - prohibited location -), so nothing changes when I get on, or off, the tractor. Basically a "have & not want is preferable to want & not have" kind of thing. Same reason for spare tire, fire extinguisher & first aid kit in the car - there because the cost to have it available is low even if never used, but the cost for not having it could potentially be very high.

My usual carry is a relatively inexpensive full size Bersa .40 S&W, carried in a homebrew hybrid leather/kydex IWB with an unbuttoned camp shirt as cover. Sweat & dust is expected - not worried about the finish, just functionality. Things get cleaned up & dried out at the end of the day so they are dry & oil wiped for the next day. If we are working in the woods around the house, a .38 snubby with shot shells is generally near by to deal with the occasional copperhead (away from the house, out at the acreage - live & let live -).

I don't think anyone could truly come up with all the reasons, and for that reason I don't think someone should have a particular reason in mind. As an example, if you go out expecting to confront a thug, you may potentially make an enemy of someone who could easily be a friend; or much worse. It's just best to have it handy, just in case... I like nikdfish's fire extinguisher and first aid kit analogies, but those are more for a specific use. A firearm is handy in a number of situations, none of which I want to be in the mindset of "expecting". Expecting something bad to happen is much different than being prepared. Expecting something bad to happen can be mentally draining and exhausting. Being prepared brings a peace of mind.

If it's based on a true story, should make a great movie too, but you wont get much support from Rosie O'Donnell and her friends here on TBN. I'm quite certain I could see Tom Selleck or Clint Eastwood being the main character..... quigley shoots bucket.wmv - YouTube Two Kinds Of People - YouTube

What boggles my mind when people say here there and everywhere, we'll this doesn't happen to me so it's not a problem, but my thinking is, if it happened to someone else, it could happen to me.

So far carrying a gun on a tractor is not a need, just a want, and so far here gangs and bad people are not a concern. It's the half dozen stories I hear and read about in my state, other states, every year, about a rabid fox, raccoon etc. attacking someone, in the woods on the street, and now they have to go through a series of rabies shots, all because no firearm, from what I've read rabies can be serious.

I like the old saying, "better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it"........

I agree with your ending quote!!!!

I don't carry on my tractor. I know every critter on my farm on a first name basis. I've only witnessed an animal act a bit aggressive around me once. That was a male coyote during mating season. He didn't like my male dog in his territory. If I had a gun onboard I would not have shot him. I discussed this incident with my dog and he understood. He didn't go back in that part of the timber without out me for a couple months. :)

Sometimes you come off a bit harsh. This isn't a roundtable discussion at the local coffee shop where everyone can visually see your mood when saying these things. But it isn't. It's digital communication. So,,,,, sometimes those reading your posts get their feelings hurt and they lash out. In the end I believe you to be intelligent and respectful. Your "bedside manner" is just a bit rusty. :)

Your above post is very profound if read a couple times with no bias. Thanks for this post.

Another great post. Thank you. Or as Brandi would say "hugs".

Dang, now that's a good dog. Out of 5 Boston Terriers we have had through the years only one would do as I requested concerning behavior. All of them hated my guns although they never heard me shoot a gun.
