That cylinder is far too big for a splitter. Looks to be off a Bulldozer or similar.
Yes it is very strong but will take a long time to send it enough oil to move the piston.
Also it would be designed for much higher pressures that you could ever provide so it is a monster without a true purpose.

Homemade splitters are almost always built with stuff the builder has laying around or can get cheaply. Paying retail for parts makes building a splitter unpractical quickly. And we don’t know how big it actually is. It’s hard to judge the size from a picture.

The markings on the hose say 1/2” so that can be used as a reference. The cyl is BIG.

I am sure you are right. He was a machinist at a steel mill and had many of projects going on at home. It was more than likely free to him minus the labor and a gift to us when we purchased our land. Surely it could outlast my needs. Just wanting something newer and more time efficient.

Maybe some day I can make a project myself out of it haha.
