The closest decent barbecue joint to me in in New Lebanon, NY. An old lady ran the operation for years. The new owners are from MA.

I/We've only eaten our way down the east CONUS coast and sampled the regional foods and the barbecue along the way (and back). There are differences in style and tastes. We like spicy/hot foods, but not those "sweet" rubs and sauces and the "Southern Style" iced tea- sweet enough for a hummingbird.

I like NC style BBQ, never cared for real hot stuff, prefer to taste the meat. Don’t like the sweet either. I’m a southern boy and grew up on the sweet tea, but I like it less sweet than that.

I get confused with the different regional styles of barbecue. I do not cook with sugar if I can get away with it. There is a lot of vinegar and the rub mix in the mop sauce, my barbecue sauce is on the side and the "heat"; the ketchup usually is enough sweet, I may add some honey to balance out the cider vinegar.

Daugen- Next time.

I used to ride bike a lot, i enjoyed it. Dont ride much any more, cant right now. I keep wanting to get an exerciser bike, one piece of exercise equipment I'm likely to use. Wife keeps saying no.

I'm a bike person, too, bef. Or, well, I used to be. Gotten fat and lazy over the past few years. We had my Wife's G'Ma's old exercise bike for awhile, until she gave it to her uncle to free up some room. I miss it. We have other equipment at home - Bowflex, treadmill, elliptical - but I'd really just rather ride a bike, even if it's not going anywhere.

... the "Southern Style" iced tea- sweet enough for a hummingbird.

For those of us not from the South, that first experience with authentic Southern Sweet Tea is a real eye opener.

Amazon notified me today that my prime membership was going up again, I cancelled. It had gotten past the point of diminishing returns.

I'm also questioning the value of Prime.. it is nice when I need something quick and it is under the free shipping threshold for non prime, but they have missed enough "guaranteed delivery dates" that it is not that big of advantage. I report the missed deliveries and they sometimes extend my prime for a month, but it is a hassle. I watched some free video, but seldom do now..

PJS- At the time that I had my first taste of real genuine Southern ice tea I was a medication induced brittle diabetic. My blood sugars really spiked +400  I was sugar rushing so hard that I wanted to get out of the truck at 75mph and start running alongside. it was awesome

Since our two Saint Bernard's passed last Summer and Fall (age/bone cancer) I have been doing no walking/hiking/snowshoeing and it shows. Spring will come some day and so will a dog maybe two.

They may have poured gasoline on it and lit for all I know, but my terminology fit just fine, if what you were doing was normal and it caught fire anyway, that痴 about as spontaneous as it gets.
They said when the pic was taken, the stove had been pulled away from the wall.

I'm with you, Buckeye, make mine sweet'n'smoky. :licking:

Just got word that this morning someone jumped from the high concrete bridge over the West Branch of the Feather River, just a few miles from here. Apparently he's not the first, but the first since I've been here. They've recovered the body, but it's too bad someone wasn't able to reach out to the guy and give him the help he needed.

RNG- It's so sad that people feeling so depressed, so powerless, so trapped, so unloved/unwanted, so angry that they feel that ending their lives becomes the only option. Anti-depressants can actually "activate" the depressed individual enough to carry out their "action plan" that previously was not acted upon because the individual was too de-energized by the depression itself. There can be other more pathological motives as well,.

I had to assess for dangerousness my entire professional career and unfortunately I did lose a few some even purportedly supervised. The DMH regional office tried to hold me responsible for a "swan dive" off a building. The Director even told me that the area office staff and he as well tried, but my documentation saved my @r$e. Ultimately others were found irresponsible.

This old adage as told to my by an old psychiatrist really helped me: "'Jumpers" don't call, and 'callers' don't jump." Many times after the fact those most involved with the deceased find hidden, subtle clues and then blame themselves for not having perceived/understood the clues.

I don't think I've ever heard it said quite that way, but that's been my experience when I was a police officer. I don't think I ever handled an "attempt suicide" in which the (victim?) seriously attempted to kill himself/herself. The actual suicides that succeeded were always people who had never "attempted" before. But I'm sure there's some exceptions to that.

Post holidays are the worst for people in trouble. Charitable giving dries up, family goes back to whatever they've been doing, the weather, even out here, is bad, which shuts people away in their homes, or makes life miserable if they're stuck outside. This county has pretty good services for those that need it, some would say too good as our homeless population is exploding as people come here to take advantage of what's available. At the end of the day, though, people are gonna do what they're gonna do, and unless someone had been told directly that they were thinking of suicide and did nothing about it, it's pretty much on the jumper for the ultimate outcome.:(

I "assume"? by "Southern" everyone is talking about the southeast part of the country; not Oklahoma or Texas where I've spend most of my life. The one and only time I've been in a restaurant that didn't have unsweetened tea was in Canada. My mother was with us and was diabetic and we ate lunch one day in a place that did not have any tea made that wasn't already sweetened. But every place I know of to eat out, and every Walmart, has both sweetened and unsweetened tea OR unsweetened only and you can add sugar if you wish. Incidentally, I prefer unsweetened myself.

I agree with all if you. This is a bad time of year. Statistically things start to "improve" after St. Valentine's Day. Increased and longer daylight hours seems to be a factor. I never liked Full Moon periods either.

A pretty bridge.

Bird- At times I had the honor to work with law enforcement in dealing with the mentally ill (sometimes personally involved in physically restraining agitated individuals). I consider police officers as by necessity armed social workers. Thank you for your service.

No, Bird, when I think of "The South," I generally think of the east-of-the-Mississippi-south-of-the-Ohio area. All the sweet tea I've ever had in Texas or Oklahoma was similar to what I'm used to here in the St. Louis area; mildly sweet. The stuff they drink in "The South," though ... I don't know how they physically get that much sugar into it and it still remains a liquid.

Bird- There are only a few really decent barbecue joints around here. Within an 1 to 1.5 hour drive there are 3 that we have found so far. 1 in NY and 2 in CT. Nothing found so far in MA. .

Where in Connecticut?
