Is the Hemi tick in the engine still there?

. Saleman said they have seen some of the small desiels coming back in with problems, he was not sure what the problems as he just heard it from service scheduler.

Being honest, I don't trust salesmen any farther than I can throw them. What this statement tells me is, he had gas powered trucks on the lot he needed to move.

I know the old ones rotted out fast around the rear wheel wells but I have a bunch of co-workers that have this newer model and say that is not a problem anymore. I am in Wisconsin and My 98 gmc just started rusting about 2 years ago. But I keep vehicles long so would want corrosion protection.
A co-worker said with the hemi you are supposed to run mid grade gas in them, is that true? Although here mid grade is cheaper then regular since it is 15 percent alcohol
My hardest part is spending that much money.

89 recommended but can use 87 per the manual.

Gas, originally thought about small diesel but an extra $4500 and that takes a lot of milage to justify the extra charge. Also not too many of those sitting on dealer lots since deals are on 2017's. the early diesels had issues with the camshaft that run the high pressure injection pump. the gear wasn't pinned to the shaft and would slip which caused the pistons to hit the valves basically grenading the engine.

I have a 2015 Ecodiesel and am very happy with it.
I was averaging 22-24 with the stock Wrangler SRAs. On the highway, I got 35 mpg once on a 70 mile trip staying at 55mph, oh the horror. Usually at 60-70 mph, I got 26-28 mpg.
I switched to General Grabber tires and lost about 2 mpg. Winter blend just hit me for another 2 or so. I’m struggling to keep it around 20 average.
The Hemi is a $1-1500 upcharge and the Diesel is another $3100 or so. I think it’s worth it.
It’s quiet for a Diesel and the turbo helps it spin up.
I have a quad cab and was looking for a crew cab this fall.
Rumor is, the 2018 models are delayed and they may just wait for 2019 where they got 20 more hp and some more torque.
I miss the days when Diesel was cheaper than gas.

I am thinking about getting a new ram 1500, deals are great right now. What are goods and bads about them as I have never had a Dodge.
Any advice about undercoating them?

I have had 2 dodge trucks the last 14 years 2004 dodge 2500 with the 5.9 diesel and my 2016 dodge 2500 with the 6.4 hemi engine.Both have been great trucks.The 2004 needed about $700 in front end work at 84,000 miles.My 2016 has been rusted proofed with Krown.

No,I use 87 octane in my 6.4 hemi.

We have two Rams at work, had them about 6 months. They aren't bad. They are very basic models, V6, 4x4, A.C. power windows and locks, and thats about it. They do good on gas but not great. We also probably always carry about 1000 lbs of gear and do a lot of in town driving and idling. Just a guess but we are probably getting about 17 mpg avg. It will jump up to 22 mpg on longer trips but not always.

One complaint, with the V6 and the 8 speed, it won't pull 8th gear very well. On very flat ground it will but any kind of hill or head wind it shifts in and out of 8th a lot. My guess is with the Hemi it would be better. I sometimes just lock it out of 8th gear. I also hate the dial shifter on the dash although after about 6 months I have adjusted to it.

One plus that suprised me. I hear a lot of complaints about the low GVW of a Ram. We ran ours across a scales. Even with the gear in the truck but no driver or passenger, we had 1000 lbs or a little more of GVW left. Of course ours are very lightly optioned V6's but for us its just not an issue. I would guess we normally carry 1000 lbs of gears, maybe sometimes more.

Stay away from the diesel, rear main seal failures are common. There's a reason they are $6k cheaper than Ford and Chevrolet, and it crops up.... My sons 2014 3500 was recalled for steering flaw that couldn't be repaired and had to be bought back... Junk... Second one he replaced it with the Cummins had a RMS failure at 40k, junk.... The only reason people buy them is because they can't afford a Ford or Chevrolet. They think they are getting the same thing for less, they don't understand they are getting less. My opinion.

Does this bump thing happen when your fuel tank is around 3/4 full? Do you have the larger tank? That's a longstanding issue due to problems with baffling in the tank. At roughly 3/4 of a tank it sloshes when you come to a stop and makes a bump feel. Not the transmission.

Yes I do have the 32gal tank but it seems to happen all the time. It's not a pushing feeling like you would get w/ gas sloshing around, more of a quick instant bumping feeling like downshifting really quick.

I have a 2016 (bought Dec 2016) 1500 4x4 with the eco-diesel. We've put just under 20K miles on it. We really like the truck and the little diesel engine is great.

I had to put air bags on the rear as towing my 16' live stock trailer with two horses squatted it pretty bad. Air bags solved that problem and plus it still has a great ride, much better than my ol F-150.

Speaking of my old (2012) F-150 it was the biggest piece of junk I ever owned. Never let anybody tell you about how the quality of the Ford is so much better than the Ram. I still own two Fords but I doubt I'll buy another F-150. And this was well below 100,000 miles. By 65K miles the electric steering gave out ($1800), A/C coil leaked ($1600), multiple brake jobs, drivers seat ripped. The spark plugs in my eco also needed to be changed well below 100K but it was an easy job.

That's what my 1500 was always like, but only around the 3/4 tank mark. Had to be fuel tank in my case. If yours happens at other times then probably not.

You really want a truck that's trouble free, only choice is Toyota. I own a 2016 series Land Cruiser. Blown, the suburbans I've owned prior, away.

Bought a 2016 Ram 1500 CC with the EcoDiesel in September 2016. 26K miles now and I absolutely love the truck. Smoothest riding vehicle I’ve ever owned. The 8 speed tranny is fantastic.

Not sure what fuel tank options are available for the model you are looking at.

I have a GMC 2500HD Sierra 6.6 diesel. I removed the 36 gal fuel tank and had Transfer Flow install a replacement 60 gal fuel tank. Best vehicle modification I have ever done. Far fewer fillups, and when I see a low price on Diesel-- bang it's time to fill up.

Oddly, I have a GMC with an 8 speed and it had the same thing--Dealer did a re-flash and it's gone...Tat unexpected "bump" got my attention since it was pretty random at low speeds

We have had 3 Ram 1500's for work, great trucks never a single issue (70K+ each before work sells them)
So I bought a CTD 2500 in 2012 and it has been an excellent truck. Really like it and don't expect to get rid of it anytime soon. I looked at the Ford and Chevy but just liked the Ram better. Had a Toyota Tundra and had problems with 2 brake calipers seizing (one front and one rear), then the tranny started to shift funny so sold it for the RAM and couldn't be happier.

2012 Ram 1500 Longhorn edition 4X4. 175000 miles of I95/I75 driving mixed with country roads and an almost 2 mile dirt drive into my property. 4 Idler Arms, a leak that will cause the radio to go nose down in the cheese-dip for a week or two after a heavy rain (three different dealers could never find the leak), some sort of electronic item that controls the 4 wheel drive that went out at 101000 ( a $1000+ cost), electronics that tell me I have no fuel about 5 miles after I fill up, and a final payment made in November......

I went vehicle shopping today..... Ram was NOT on my list to look at.....

I know enough people with Dodges to kinda avoid...Suspensions over the decades have not been improved much and cause a ton of issues..The mechanicals seem to hold up well, styling is very nice and the interiors are pretty good. The Hemi seems to be a good motor along with the older diesels..Don't know enough to comment on the new coal burners though. To each his own though--been slammed enough on this site for being a GM guy.
