On another note - I went and picked up a bucket of this stuff today.

I am uncertain whether it would be good to use or not. If you click on the pdf given it goes to a Shield brand which lists as transmission/hydraulic fluid and I believe it would be fine. Yes it is the correct oil. Pretty much anything with 303 in the name is going to be correct. The description says replacement fluid for John Deere 303, J20-A which is what you want.

The name is "303 fluid" which is short for JD303 fluid. They cannot name their fluid "JD303 fluid" as that name is copyrighted by JD. So they cut it short and call it 303 fluid. They can list JD303 in the spec as its a descriptor but can't name it that. All these 303 fluids are made after the old common JD spec of 303.

Yamar's manuals recommend Deere's '303' spec UTF (Universal Tractor Fluid) for their 1970's designed geared tractors. I think for Kustrud's YM1700 it's fine.
Deere's later J20A spec superceded 303. It's mutigrade, so better for cold weather warmup.
I run cheap 303 in my geared YM240 and the backhoe. (and don't run them below 45 degrees). I use Tractor Supply's better Premium UTF in the YM186D where its Powershift, like an automatic transmission, is likely more sensitive to cold weather viscosity. This TSC premium UTF is multigrade (SAE 10W-30) and claimed compliant to J20A.

I know you guys are correct but with no mention on the container of transmission/hydraulic fluid and stating not to use on later than 1974 would take it off my list to use. Just hard headed and can't seem to help it.
