Wherever the road crew is laying new asphalt next door. Being from a no winter kinda state I would think spring to let it settle and get more compacted before winter???

Can you define "repaved"? Is it a full overlay? Or just a slurry or fog/oil coat? Or removal and replacement? Some of these processes like different timing.

It's funny, because my in laws just had this question and it was answered by the local "major paver".

He said the best time is on the hottest day of the year.

They have a parking lot which needs repaved. And last week they called the local pavers. They (pavers) said perhaps they had one more week to have it done.

I have no experience... but I was surprised by the answer.

Yep, exactly! New pavement does best when hot. In cool climates the asphalt company/suppliers will shut down when it's too cold. However, if it's a slurry repair/repave and the existing has damage and or cracking I'd be inclined to put something down before winter to slow the damage and add/repair next summer.

Anytime it is warm enough to get compacted prior to cooling for an overlay. For slurreys the hot days are better as most products are water emulsion. The heat will cure the slurred quicker.
In Cincinnati I have paved roads in every month but January. Interstates and major roads can have a different asphalt cement that requires higher ground temperature than parking lot asphalt.

Best may be when the sub base is dry and well compacted.

The current asphalt is cracked and it looks very bad. It was cracked some when we moved here in 1978 but the cracks are now a half inch wide instead of barely noticeable. The guy who came out and measured said they would put a 1-1/2" thick overlay on it. There are two places with concrete which will be taken up and will have a 6" base and 2" asphalt. The same base and asphalt in places where the turnaround will be widened.

I think I will call them and schedule for late June, early July next year.

What is the condition of the concrete areas. If good you can place asphalt over them.
Seal the cracks before overlaying the existing asphalt.
You still have two months of paving weather left in this year if contractor is looking for work and will give price break

I had a contractor patch a 10'x10' area and look at the rest of my driveway, which is badly cracked and he did an overlay on a small part of it and told me " watch it til spring and you will see the same cracks come through the overlay" he was right of course, the only problem for me is to do it right it needs to be pulverized in place, compacted, and graded then a 3"
course of asphalt. My driveway is 860' long and the best price i found was $25K.

I had a road done and a bunch of driveways in October (in northern climate) and it's aged fine (complete redo). I don't think time of year matters a great deal if they're doing it right. The real best time is when gas prices are lowest to save you money! For patching the warmer the better

When does your state budget come up? A month or two before that happens, they go on a spending spree to get rid of all the money that they have in their budget so they can say that they need more money for the next year. During this spending spree, they start more road projects then any other time in the year. Here, it started over the summer, about the end of July, beginning of August. When that happens, all road building materials jump in price because the government agencies demand certain mixes and grades of materials that cost more to create. I'm sure there is a lot of corruption in this too, but in my experience for just buying road grade gravel, it's a big jump in price because the quarry gears up to meat their demand and quantities they require. As a small time consumer, I'm not too important to all those multi million dollar contracts.

Once all the road work is done, things slow down, and prices adjust back down to normal. So in my area, late Fall through early Spring are when you get the best prices.

Kentucky has biennial budget with work spread out. I have not seen large variations in prices due to state bidding projects. Contractor work load is primary driving force

Top coat it in summer, pavement doesn't last very long in Maine, the frost lifts it pretty bad in Febuary/March.. 12 years is about all we get out of a paved driveway. My mom lives in MA, her driveway still looks pretty good after 45 years, very little to no frost down there.

The concrete is also cracked and is in two small patches each about 10' long and 2' wide. The entire driveway is one big crack. I thought about having them tear it all out and haul it off and do the base and everything again. Don't know if that would help,

I would think in your location if they prepare it correctly, it should last a long time without cracking etc..

Concrete and asphalt is about 80% base and prep. Adding good over bad typically doesn't work out well. If taking the existing out is an option I'd opt for that every time.

Get it done when they are repaving the road in front of your house. My dad did this and they did his - last of day. Screed was hot,and the truck beds were also. May have been street mix that got put down. He paid in 100.00 bills. They seemed real happy.

I just got a couple quotes... and a couple more are coming, for a long driveway serving four homes including ours. For 6750sqft @3in thick including grading/gravel/prep, the quotes were both about $25K plus state tax. This is over well packed and maintained gravel (30 years old) but steep slope.

The company I got the quote from is the one everybody uses. Supposedly they are the largest around and do the best job. I have seen their work and they are good.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I have checked my finances closely and I don't think we need to do another major job this year. Putting it off six months will let me build up funds AND I am having a small shed built with some large equipment on the drive. So now would not be a good time. The shed should have been finished but the builder contacted me that a three day job he was on was going to take three weeks (they found rot under the siding around all the windows in a house) then the rains hit. So it wont be finished until middle/end of October.

Once again TBN as come thru and I thank all of you for your comments.
