The BCS manual talks about a dipstick with a flat side, but mine is just a rod. It is slightly offset.

I assume the dipstick should go as far from the center of the transmission housing as possible. Does this sound right, and is this now the normal dipstick?

You're correct, the rod should be off center to the outside to avoid the center of the transmission.
The manuals have used that old picture and description of the flat sided dipstick for decades. I have a 605 that was built in 1994, and the dipstick looks the same as yours.
