just passed the freezing line so am headed out to get rid of my two ghosts flying around in the orchard.
Those two apple trees were my very first and boy are they the earliest also. They had a bunch of flowers on them, none of which would have
survived 25 degrees last night. So while I knocked a few buds off bumbling with the sheet (imagine doing this with 20mph winds...) I'm hopeful
they will be mostly ok. The real worry was not this freeze, it's the next one...my peaches and apples will be bursting out in flowers soon and
then it's up to fate. Well, I found two more sheets...

In your area, do you have to call in the burns? We do, and however it works, the FD is not dispatched, so it must work good.

One big deal was the Marine Corp base not telling the neighboring counties they had a really big controlled burn going. There were responders running all up and down the roads that day.

No requirement to call in your control burn here. That might change as population grows and false alarms increase.

Be safe!

27°F and clear skies this morning, going up to 57° today.

Mostly, the band I was in at that time played down there every Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend for many years. We camped at Bearcat Getaway near Lesterville, and used their canoes on the river. That flood definitely messed things up down there. There were logs lodged 20 feet up in trees. The only good part is that it happened in December. Could have been catastrophic had it happened during the summer months.

Good Morning! 51F @ 6:45AM. Considerable cloudiness. Occasional rain showers this afternoon. Thunder possible. High 52F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

Good question about the dam failure, Don. A satellite view would indicate that most of downtown Oroville would be washed away.

Screen Shot 2017-02-10 at 6.55.26 AM.png

But looking at a topographic map, it's not so clear cut. The river canyon is cut pretty deeply on the west side of the dam and would tend to contain the water as it moved west. But the dam is holding back a 700' wall of water and there's lots of it, so it still could very well wipe out the whole town. The emergency spillway on the east side of the dam along Miner's Ranch Road is much less populated, and the flow would be much, much less as the water would rise gradually, but there are still quite a few properties there that could be in danger of flooding. The water is up another 7' this morning even though the outflow has been increased to 65,038 CFS. That's because inflows are still very high, 144,940 CFS this morning, having dropped from a peak of 190,435 CFS at 7PM yesterday. I would be very surprised if we didn't get to see what gets wet below the emergency spillway tonight, and for sure on Saturday.

The latest from KRCR TV:
"The Butte County Sheriff's office said Thursday night, based on the information received from DWR (Department of Water Resources), there is no imminent or expected threat to public safety or the integrity of Oroville Dam.

However, residents in Butte County communities along the Feather River should use this time to prepare in the event an evacuation warning is issued. Get ready, gather important items, and consider where you and your family may go if an evacuation warning is issued."

Things aren't looking great for the spillway, either this morning. The blown out east side is widening under the increased flows, and also spreading downhill. What's not clear from the photo is if it's also working its way up hill, but other photos from the scene show crews are outside watching. Saturday might be a good day to take that motorcycle ride over to the dam to do some site seeing, but I bet they've got the roads south of the dam closed off...

More headlight tinkering on the van today, along with a trip into town for supplies...

TGIF gang!

A few flurries of snow blowing around this morning. I was out at first light in an attempt to get to the hay barn while the mud was still solid. Hay is certainly going down fast this year.

About 9 degrees right now and a few flurries coming down. The high today is to be about 30 and maybe an inch of of snow.
We're looking at heavy snow on Sunday into Monday...per the forecast, it could be 8" to 12"+.

Plan of the day is to get diesel fuel (almost out) and anything the wifey wants to do. With the snow coming in, I'm sure she'll want to get groceries.

44 going to 62.

Bought a couple of paint samples for the barn, so once it is warm enough can spray the whole thing. Trying red to make the wife happy, but turns out she's not too crazy about the shades I picked. So I'll paint a couple sections today and see how they look. I still lean green, but can like a bright red. Actually, I'm not that picky.

May go to the car show today after the gym.

a really good reason to drive slowly in the snow...

not a good day yesterday. Tree company misshipped and sent me someone else's 24 tree order. 24 pecan trees, 7-8 footers. Took me over an hour of hard work repacking those trees onto the pallet, after cutting all the ties to get them out. A real PITA. Hope to get mine next week. Put the tree company on notice that if they looked beat up, I was refusing them all. Not an auspicious start.

45 high of 67 today big change from last two days. Off to look at jobs and enjoy the mild weather

Trying to pick out paint colors for bathroom and we are having a hard time. Base cabinets in waiting on counter top to be measured. Once counter top is in (manufactured quartz) then tower can be installed.

Tile on floor 75 percent complete but ran out of tile which reorder will not come in until this coming Wednesday. Tile installation in shower to start Monday. Two inch squares on floor and bench one by ones in niches. Walls and ceilings are large rectangles about 9in by 2foot not quite sure need to measure.

Cabinets are walnut with chrome handles. Wife has done a really good job picking out everything and we are both excited to see the finished product

18 going for a high of 25. Snow flurries on the way. We got 6" yesterday. I will clean that up today and make a place to put more snow.

mpham and L4New, I think you will be using your buckets for this snow by early next week. When the mounds in the shopping centers get so high you can't see around the corners. Though I think for most of us the winter has been very light so far. I see Texas may get more snow; what do they call it? winter whiplash

44 degrees with the sun coming out

Ditto on the weather, mid 40's now. Nice day to be outside. May torch the burn pile, which is a lot bigger than normal.

Need to do electrical work today around the farm, new switches and ballast for some lights here and there. I'd rather play with fire.

Have a great day all, be safe.
