I may be buying a used pickup. As my brother lives near Austin, been thinking about looking in TX because no road salt.

Normally in the People's Republic of MAssachusetts I'd have to submit a title application, registration application and wait for plates. But in other states there are temporary plates or the plate stays with the vehicle.

The "MA Way" I'd probably have to go down, buy the truck and leave it at my brother's, then fly home and back to get the plates. Ironically my insurance company is USAA in TX.

So how does it work for an out of state buyer in TX?

Is the truck at a dealer or are you buying from an individual?

TXDMV.GOV - Buying or Selling a Vehicle

You can also call the local tax office in the county where your brother lives.

If you are buying from a Texas dealer they will give you a temporary tag.

Can't comment the tags but support the idea. I didn't understand what rust was until moving to New England. Lot of grocery getting, powder puff trucks in Texas. I grew up there and the VAST majority of trucks on the road are primarily status symbols and the biggest thing they haul is golf clubs and a skidoo. This is especially true of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.

Look at the Atlanta Craigslist too. Plenty of solid grocery getter trucks down here.

Good idea

That's where I was going to go until my old truck urgently needed to replaced.

Sorry for the off topic posts btw.

For an answer I'd call the Internet sales department of any large dealer. I'd bet they have a way to work it out with no delay!

Hundreds of pickups: number that are 4wd is much smaller. As you've probably seen you can't give away a 2wd truck in these parts.

True.

You can get a temp tag at the local Texas vehicle registry which is good for 30 days and usually sells for 1/12 of the registry price ($1-2 ) or if your brother in law will let you, you could drive it back home with the Texas plates if they are still good. Just need to inform your insurance carrier that you bought a new truck. Usually they just want the serial number and model and plate is not an issue.
