[Scut 4 Big Bucks]

I love my 3 point splitter... I don't buy tractors to keep the hours off them, I bought them to use! My tractor is always ready to go, and I like not having "another" small gas motor to deal with!

I like NOT having a small screaming engine by me. I like it that my splitter is "self propelled", and it's GREAT for moving wagons if needed.

I cut my firewood over a trailer or wagon, so I don't have to use a tractor to move wood to my splitter.

My diesel "sippps" off road diesel sloooooowly as I split, and if needed, I have the remotes on the back of the tractor available for "other" things as I split.

My 3 point splitter is absolutely one of my "best buys"...

I was thinking the same thing Rob. I bought this tractor to use it, not to look at it in the shed, hence my question here.

I really enjoy splitting wood with the maul, but there's always that tree that is just a pain in the ***** to split by hand. I've been buying those yellow fiberglass handles for my maul head the last few years. I seem to get about 1 year out of the handle, depending on how much my oldest son uses it. He isn't real accurate with it, and I just cringe a lot when he swings. I don't mind though, he's out with me and doing his best to get the job done.

Thanks for the reply's fellas. I ended up buying a Fiskars 8lb splitting maul tonight, because of the lifetime warranty on the handle. I still wanted the workout associated with wood, and the splitter wasn't going to help me with that.

I watched a video of that Split fire wood splitter on youtube. Looked like a beast, being able to split both ways. I just can't justify spending that much, especially when the tractor I have just won't operate it at it's best.

If you are going to just split an occasional nasty round, your 5 GPM would do. It will just be slow is all.

I used the pallet system for a few years and it works great, the only problem was rodents nesting in the wood and getting transfered into the garage (where my stove is). I used a carryall that I built now but load it each time to get rid of the rodents. I load the bucket to move the wood to the garage or the carryall can be moved by the 3 point, loaded and moved to the garage. I have two of the carryalls so I can always keep a load in the shed and ready to move inside in case of bad weather. this system works much better for me.

Sawyer Rob, is yours powered by remotes, or do you have a PTO pump?



Am I wrong in thinking that a PTO pump would be a way to get good cycle time from a tractor without much hydraulic flow?

He's running a 20 GPM pto pump.

Good choice! i personally can't stand my 3 point splitter. I used it again today and was reminded how much I dislike it.

I always see several listed on CraigsList. Seems like there's lots of people ending up not liking them. Really have to have flow (either from the tractor or from a PTO pump).

There are numerous reasons I don't like the 3 point hitch style, which are all personal preference, I understand some really do like them, that is why they make different types, for all of us different people

Cycle time is just one reason I don't like it. However, I will say that if I had a 4 way Split-Fire 3403 with a log lift, then I could be happy with the 3 point style then. I would likely convert it over time to a self contained unit regardless, but I'd be much happier with one. It's probably the only 3 point log splitter I would buy. Again, all personal preference, but yes, based on the reading I've done here, and talking with others, most people don't prefer them and after they get one, either sell it to get a self contained, or keep it and be unhappy with it (i.e. me :laughing Some love em, but I think that's the minority. You can't argue that its convenient and you never have to worry about another engine, although the engines nowadays are pretty darned reliable (and so cheaply replaceable) that I think it's a moot point.

Here is a quick time lapse. Just imagine how much less I would have handled the wood with a 4 way Split-Fire! Not to mention my back wouldn't be hurting me today if I had a log lift.

Here's som pics from today and about 2 weeks ago from some hemlock I've been cutting to get sawn into boards for a bridge project. Our snow all melted earlier this week but the temps dropped back down Into the 20s last night and today and made it nice with no snow and the ground is nice and stiff. Tomorrows temps are going to be around a high of 30 here so I plan on getting a few more trees down an logs out
