I didn't read back on this thread any, because of the size of it.
Does anyone have a 3 pnt log splitter they are using on a scut? I have a Massey GC1715, around 25hp. Looking to buy a log splitter for it?

A lot of folks question putting hours on your tractor, tying it up for the sake of a $300 small gas motor. You might save a few bucks initially but there are plenty of decent splitters out there for a grand that will get the job done.

Agreed. I have a standalone splitter. Just the expense of gasoline vs. diesel....the splliter's motor sips gas compared to the 3 cylinder diesel and its more epensive fuel. I use the tractor to move wood around when I'm splitting. That would not be possible if I used a PTO splitter.

I love my 3 point splitter... I don't buy tractors to keep the hours off them, I bought them to use! My tractor is always ready to go, and I like not having "another" small gas motor to deal with!
I like NOT having a small screaming engine by me. I like it that my splitter is "self propelled", and it's GREAT for moving wagons if needed.
I cut my firewood over a trailer or wagon, so I don't have to use a tractor to move wood to my splitter.
My diesel "sippps" off road diesel sloooooowly as I split, and if needed, I have the remotes on the back of the tractor available for "other" things as I split.
My 3 point splitter is absolutely one of my "best buys"...

I'm sure it would work but it just depends how much splitting you plan to do. If its' just a little bit you can probably get by with the remotes which probably have around 5 gpm flow. If you plan to do a whole lot of splitting I'd think about going to a PTO pump so you can get more flow which will speed up the splitting.
As far as a 3 point splitter it just depends. Do you plan to split in one spot or more around constantly? If you split in one spot is there electricity nearby? Do you want to use your tractor while you are splitting for other tasks or are you comfortable with it being tied up?
The answer to those questions should help determine whether a 3 point, stand alone gas powered, or stand alone electric will work best for your application.
I have a nice speeco 3 point splitter but I really don't use it that much as my stove will take up to 10" rounds so I only split the big stuff and I wish I had bought a stand alone unit or even better an electric unit. I have also found that I prefer to split on one spot where I backed my trailer in loaded with wood. I also have found that I prefer to throw the split wood in the bucket so I can move it easily. But on the bright side I do enjoy the 20+ GPM flow and 3,000+ PSI as it makes splitting fast but if I could do it over again I would do it differently. I really like the looks of the quality electric units that are out there and I suspect I could run one off a welder outlet. Nice and quiet as well as cheap to operate and dependable.
The 1st problem I see is you only have 5gpm to the rear remotes. The splitter will be slow. The next problem is the hydraulic tank on a SCUT is not very big. Someone on here had a BX with a splitter on it and tried to move it with the wood splitter cylinder extended and the tractor would not move because there was not enough oil in the for it to move. So if the hydraulic oil level on the tractor is going that low when you use the splitter it can't good for the tractors hydraulic system.A good 3PH splitter (Splitfire 3203) is going to cost you $1400-1500 then you still need remotes on top of that. Splitfire also has a PTO pump as an option but I bet that would put you somewhere around $2,000.
I prefer a stand alone splitter. You don't have to get the tractor out to use it. A stand alone can be moved around by hand. Depending on the setup a stand alone is faster. Harbor Freight has a nice stand alone splitter that is pretty fast. 2 ton Log Splitter
