The funny thing is I like visiting MN in winter! It's very cold so the snow is nice and fluffy: much different from the wind-blown, bleached concrete we get on the coast....

Our ski place averages 10' a season and people only ***** when there's less!

Talk about misery, we have no sun and the Detroit Lions! The black bears are the only Michiganders to have enough common sense to sleep until spring.

I use the snowblower to make paths through about 8" of dry, powdery snow yesterday. Wind came up last night and there was considerable drifting. Ionly had to shovel a few spots to reopen the path but that drifted in stuff was solid enough I could have cut blocks to make an igloo. Temp has been way below freezing for a week.

I don't think Indiana justly deserves such a high ranking.... it only snows in the tiny northwest corner of the state. We were originally part of Michigan. No one else in the state knows how to drive in snow. You drive 30 miles south of here and its 20 degrees warmer, no snow on the ground, and there's palm trees. A female state trooper once tried to give my sister a ticket in Indianapolis for reckless driving for going 45 in a 55 zone in 2" of snow.... in court my sister explained to the judge that up in South Bend, we are taught to drive in the snow. We drive up to the lake in the snow to see the 15' waves break over the light house. We drive to the park and go sledding. We drive out for ice cream every time it snows. We're used to it. Its a way of life..... The judge made my sister apologize to the cop for passing her.

The people who wrote this haven't truly visited Colorado...... They only went to the Touristy spots....... You want to see brutal Winter??? Go to Alamosa Colorado, a place that will have the coldest temp in the lower 48 several times each Winter...... :confused3:

I just hate the southern MI winter weather. Get a week of snow and cold then a few days of high 30's maybe even 40. Just warm enough to make a mess of the dirt roads and make the ice on the lakes iffy. Go two hours north and the high 30's we get in the south are only about 32 or 33 so winter lasts until March. I'd much rather see it get below freezing and stay there until spring. The article is definitely right about the clouds. I can't honestly remember the last sunny day we had around here.

I think that they have Michigan and Minnesota reversed. We have a lot less sunlight than Minnesota, I believe that Flint, MI, has the most overcast days than any other place in the country. I'm a little west of there, and we frequently go a week at a time without seeing the sun. A lot of SAD disease here, depression and alcoholism.

The snowiest place in MN averages 86" of snow a year. In the Great Lakes snowfall region (Buffalo, Rochester etc) that would be a vacation from winter.

Caribou, Maine averages 109" and the least they've ever gotten is 68". And ski areas everywhere get crazy amounts of snow (that's why they have ski areas!). Jay Peak, Vt averages almost 300". Mount Baker CA averages over 600".

Too cold to snow as much in Minnesota.

"Most heavy snowfalls happen with relatively warm air temperatures near the ground -- usually at 15 degrees F or above. When the temperature drops into the single digits, or below zero, heavy snow is unlikely. That’s not because it’s too cold, but because its too dry. When temperatures are that low, the air’s capacity for water vapor becomes very small."

Too Cold to Snow?

Maine - 5th. About right. The cheerful part is right too. Ice fishing and snowsleds gets people outside like nothing else. Lately the winters haven't been bad, some snow but the temps have been good!
18" of snow on the ground. It rained yesterday. 33F at 7am. And the sun is shining.Another hour I'll be heading out to scrape some snow off of the lower drive.
