Do you have a drone?

Correct, but if your drone exceeds .55 pounds, it must be tagged with your FAA UAS number BEFORE flight or you are in violation.

I believe the FAA regulations talk about drones lighter or heavier than 55 LBS. I may be wrong but I don't recall any mention of 0.55 pounds in the regulations.

I call them Quads, not drones. The drone word has been embellished by the idiots in the media. A Drone is a totally autonomous craft whether it is a fixed wing or a multi-copter. True some hobby level ones are reaching that level and it seems that a lot of irresponsible twits seem to be able to afford them. Sadly it has thrown the hobby into disrepute so I rarely fly my quad now and if I do it is only within my property boundaries. Unfortunately the irresponsibility seems to have moved into the FPV side of it as well and I am fully in support of better regulation so that at least there is no excuse for when irresponsible pilots invade privacy and restricted airspace.
There are more fixed wing models fitted with cameras than multi-copters but you never hear the media mentioning them. Just not so dramatic as a 'drone'.

Above .5 lbs. supposed to be registered. Plus other regs apply. No fly closer than 4 miles from an airport, is what I recall and some altitude regs. I know you can register several quad copters under one license. I think license is good for 3yrs, might be 5yrs. don't remember.

My neighbor got one for Christmas. Said we should try it out on next day with calm air. That's when I'll remind him we live 400 yards from the airport.... :rolleyes:

No person may operate a small unmanned aircraft that is eligible for registration under 49 U.S.C. 44101-44103 unless one of the following criteria has been satisfied:

(a) The owner has registered and marked the aircraft in accordance with this part;
(b) The aircraft weighs 0.55 pounds or less on takeoff, including everything that is on board or otherwise attached to the aircraft; or
(c) The aircraft is an aircraft of the Armed Forces of the United States.

If it's a Phantom, and he's flying it from the phone app, I don't think it will even let him fly it. They won't take off in a no-fly zone.

Thanks jymbee - nothing too restrictive, just that if it's more than a kids toy, you have to put your license information on board. And obviously NO airspace incursions. I live (just barely) outside the Washington DC 30 mile restriction zone so I won't end up with the feds knocking on my door.

If I ever see one it will be very unique. I live one mile from the closest public road and the nearest neighbor is over four miles distance. For a "drone" of any type to be near my house or property it would definitely be lost or the operator would be trespassing. Like me, neither my neighbor to the north or south have time for such foolishness.

I had a phantom 3 and sold it when the mavic pro was released. I'm still waiting on my mavic pro to ship. I ordered it 2 months ago...
Drones are fun, but i feel that you have to have a good place to fly and multiple places to fly in order to keep it fun. Flying the same route over and over takes the fun out of it. My ultimate hope is to one day have a drone equipped with a thermal camera so I could do nighttime wildlife surveys and etc as a hobby.

If someone yelled "look at that flying quad" I'd be looking for a four wheeler with wings.
