We were a lot luckier - missed the rain and had 40 degrees. A beautiful day.

I got to cut a really nice balsam fir today. One of the very few I have cut on my lot that did not have any butt rot yet. Not a state record tree but way above average. Over the years I have averaged about 60 board feet of usable saw logs per tree. This one by itself is a little over 300. Bear with me - I get excited over this stuff.

Then there were 3 more smaller ones at the top.

Those were both really nice logs.

Now it is time for the hard part, the splitting.

Brought my wood for the rest of the year home. If I wait till everything is frozen I don't rut up my lawn. I'll have enough at home now to last till next Christmas. View attachment 492831 View attachment 492832 View attachment 492833

My wife has family up there. We have been wanting to travel up for years but just haven't had the time. Apparently it's beautiful country and not all commercialized like other destinations. Just need to tie yourself down or the Mosquitos will carry you away.

They had the luck of perfect timing... it was early spring... still cold but warmer blue sky days...

All the locals kept saying how perfect their timing was in that they missed the mosquitoes and the bears were not all out in force.

The locals were extremely hospitable... they had rented a car and the owner said when they get off the plane pick one as they all have the keys in the ignition... also said never go anywhere more than a half tank away unless you know where you can fill up...

Trappers, Dog Sleds, heating and cooking with wood... really a different way of life... but real good folks...

Love seeing your pictures. Glad you are able to get out there and be productive. Unfortunately, I had to retire the tractor, winch, and the Super Split for the winter due to a injury that will have me laid up until the end of March. I look forward to more of your pictures and videos.

Sorry to here that Mike. That is a long rehab. It is hard to know what to say knowing how hard it must be on you and your family. Make sure you take all the time you need to heal.

If you get up to camp next summer or fall let me know. My wife likes to go up to Silvio Conte birding so we get up there several time a year.

I did a little splitting today. I also made a short video of the splitter in action.

What kind of stove do you have? I have noticed that Kiwibro also has small firewood, so I guess it is common in New Zealand.

It can handle wood a bit bigger than what is there but its for my mums house so lighter is better. I can easily get a all night burn from this size as it only gets below freezing a few nights a year. so its mostly to keep the damp cold away.

Also if I make the rings any longer the dam things will weigh over 80kg of hard wood I cant lift those all day. I really need a better splitter. :)

Yeah our youngest turns two this spring so it will be easier to do some traveling. During spring breakup is about the only time I have off work so it should work out perfectly hopefully in the next couple years or so.
