Kubota MX5800
Hi everyone, I'm new here, and have never owned a tractor in my life. In fact, I've never really lived rural until about a year ago. Here is a little description of our situation.

My wife and I purchased 20 acres of forest/hills/pasture in a mountainous area. She is a doctor who took a rural posting and I left my job and came with. I'm now learning how to do things I never in my life thought I would end up doing. If someone had told me that in twelve months I'd be ankle deep in mud rebuilding a hydraulic cylinder on an old crawler in November, I'd have thought them crazy, but I digress - It's been a really fun learning experience.

We have a couple horses, and wanted to create space for two small pasture areas. For one of the fields we hired someone to go all out with a D8 and excavator as the stumps were huge fir and birch. That field is now a ripped up mudhole, but the stumps are gone. In the other field, I am trying something different. I popped the stumps out and turned them over with an old International 125e track loader w/backhoe, and I'm going to let them sit until spring, thinking the snow will help strip off some of the dirt. We decided that since we are going to need a tractor for cleanup/blading anyway, why not pick one up while Kubota is offering the 84 month 0% deal and clearing out last years inventory. We'll get a grapple for it, and then come spring it can pick up those stumps and plop them on a burn pile a lot more efficiently than pushing them around with the crawler.

I've scoured the forums researching brands etc. and selecting models that would suit our needs. We are two hours from all major dealers so there was no advantage there. First I went to the JD dealer, who had some really great used models. I asked what he had in the 50-70 hp range and he showed me one and I gave it a test drive. It was great and I was seriously liking it. After hopping off I noticed the badge on the side, and it was a 4044M, so I was a little disappointed as he had said it was a 4052M, but people make mistakes. The next day I had reconsidered a bit and phoned for a quote, left a message, and got no reply. The emailed quote I had received on a 5055e was significantly more than I had expected, so that concluded my experience with green.

When I walked into the Kubota dealership, they toured me through their big new facility and repair center and sat down with me. In fact, for a while, two of their sales team were chatting with me over coffee. This would be my first tractor so I had a lot of questions, and they asked me a lot of questions about my needs as well. After about an hour, one of them took me to a farm where they had sold one, and I got to drive it around a little. In all, I spent about three hours with them, and came away impressed. The other dealerships were pretty standard experiences so I won't go into detail, but I had read that 'buying the dealer' is a consideration in the purchase, so +1 to that particular Kubota dealer. I sent away for quotes from all of the dealers via email afterward, and although Mahindra was the least expensive, Kubota wasn't much more. Several people in my area have Kubotas, and I have read that it can be beneficial to buy what others have in the service area, so that was another factor for us, remote as we are.

We settled on a Kubota MX5800 and will take delivery in a week or so. It will be used to pick up/place stumps that have been pulled, box blade, and eventually run a small square baler and do all kinds of other tasks like moving rocks. We are getting an 84" Farm King box blade with it, and as soon as our dealer starts offering Land Pride attachments, we are getting a root grapple and rock bucket. Add ons to our purchase include filled tires, canopy w/light kit, and third function hydraulics. I didn't get the rear remote as I can add that on in a few years. The only thing that made me a little bit hesitant about the Kubota MX5800 was the lift capacity, as some of the stumps are monsters, but we'll do what we can with the box blade in the back w/weights for ballast, and anything else will have to be dealt with by Old Beef (crawler).

I'm super excited and cant wait to get my hands on it. These forums have been a great source of knowledge and were instrumental to us in the decision making process.

Thanks!:)

Congratulations, I really think the MX5800 is very good tractor for the money. Take it for what it's worth, but I won't have a tractor without a minimum two rear remotes and a hydraulic top-link and it's cheaper to get it as a package deal. Looking back, I can't believe I didn't catch on quicker and went without so long.

Otherwise you seem pretty well set up.

Thanks for the input on the top link and rear remotes. I know that eventually they will be required so maybe I'll try to package them up and see what the dealer can offer me while it's still there.

Have a great weekend

I will second the motion, that it is easier to get the tractor ordered with what you might need rather than doing it later. It is more trouble later, and often more dollars too. Been there, done that. I had to learn the hard way that tractors need SSQA on the front loader. I had to have it installed on my previous tractor. It would have been a lot cheaper and a lot less trouble to have it done at the dealership or picked one on the lot that had it to begin with. Live and learn in this business. :)

I will be. I looked all over for some information regarding stump weights by species and honestly I have no idea how much these things weigh. My crawler with the backhoe on is 30,000+ lbs, so my frame of reference is spotty when it comes to max loader weights for a tractor. The most important thing is to get the dirt off them as much as possible. I think dealing with stumps is one of the hardest things on a machine, so I'm definitely going to be taking it slow. Good idea on wheel weights as well, do you know how much those cost by chance? The box blade should be about 750 lbs so it will be nice to have that in the back.

The box blade will help a lot but if it is not enough you can build a box to go on top to add more weight if needed. This is a much cheaper solution than dedicated wheel weights. Just another idea.

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder. Congratulation on your new rig!

Your experience with 'your' Kubota dealership is much like my own with 'my' JD... even to the point of being taken to drive one at another customer's property. That speaks volumes as to their reputation. They've sold you a tractor that suits your needs. Good stuff!

Welcome aboard. The MX5800 is a great size. One other "attachment" I'd think of getting is lots of good chain. My M4700 has slightly less lift capacity then your 5800 is spec'd for, but there have been several times I needed to wrap a bunch of chain around wood and drag it before I could get my bucket to it (I don't have a grapple yet). Also a good winch, either a full blown 3-pt skidding winch or at least a winch you can mount to either end on a standard 2" receiver may come in handy.

Be sure they check the hydro pressure while it's in the shop. Real easy to do and fix when it's in the shop. There have been many reports of spanking new delivered Kubota machines not lifting enough only to find they were running at a far lower pressure than spec.

And WE NEED PICS or it's just an internet rumor :)

Tractors are made to PULL.

Plan on dragging those big stumps with chain from the tractor's rear/center drawbar.

Grade 70, 5/16" chain is heavy enough for any load your tractor can apply and lighter than lesser grade 3/8" chain. You will want a Grade 70 5/16" Slip Hook on one end of each piece of chain and a Grade 70 5/16" Grab Hook on the other end of each piece of chain. I recommend 1 X 8' + 1 X 12' lengths, which can be linked together, to begin. Have cut to desired lengths in store. Very difficult to cut Grade 70 chain at home.

Heavy stumps, if you attempt to lift with a grapple, will not come up. Instead, your tractor's rear wheels will lift, pivoting on the front axle. Always a potential tractor rollover scenario.

Right on, thanks for the feedback. I'll check with the dealer on the hydro pressure and it's probably time to get some new chain anyway - I only have old lengths kicking around from who knows when.

Congrat's on finding a dealer you feel comfortable with & it's cheaper in the long run to purchase options at the beginning.

FYI, I have ~800lbs 3pth concrete ballast, 1000lbs rimguard liquid in the R4 rear tires, 250lbs of cast iron rear wheel weights, and 200lbs of tubby middle-aged operator on my MX4800.

Only now am I unable to lift the rear of the tractor with the FEL. And only now do I lug the engine down before loosing traction (in 4wd) on a regular basis (and then wish I bought the mx5800! :drink:)

After listening to more knowledgeable TBN members than I, I have fluid filled tired wheel weights and 1100 pounds on my 3PH and rear wheels as wide as I can get to get full use of my FEL with good stability. As James mentioned, the downside is cost, so my advice would be do as much as you can afford and fits your needs best.

You can't follow the rules any better than that!
