Can I cut and weld two wrenches to make a longer one?

Double wrench works great, just don't let the outer wrench slip and rotate on the end of the other wrench while applying a lot of force.
it can be hard on knuckles ask me how I know

I am astonished it takes 6 pages of comments, and the original poster hasn't solved his problem yet!

This seems so elementary I wouldn't post anything until I had the wrench made, so others could see how I solved the problem.

As others have said, it would take longer to post the question then to make it.

People must just need conversation.

What seems simple to you or I, may not be to others... Hense the need to ask questions, and the interaction that follows is often valuable to many others who read the thread, and perhaps respond to it, sharing their ideas and experance. I have often asked what may be a simple question and gotten a wide range of useful input. How useful was your input to the topic of this thread?

I was reminded of the importance of keeping the wrenches straight using the double wrench trick while removing a valve cover on a ford 6.4 diesel at work last week. Watch yer knuckles!

Uhhh, you must have missed it. I'm the OP and used suggestions mentioned to solve the problem and said so in post #39. There is a wrench out there called a "flywheel wrench" that is extra long and will work perfectly for me. Who knew?

The extra banter is very helpful to those who don't know. Knowledge is passed down in much the way all of us learned.

A breaker bar and socket should fit in that space with no problem. I measured a 1/2" breaker bar with a 1" socket on it and it's 2-3/8" from socket edge to the back of the breaker bar head. You should be able to roll an 11/16" twelve point socket in there with no problem.

If you have a Harbor Freight store near you go choose your weapon. Search results for: 'breaker bar'

I have their 36" half inch bar I use often. The 3/8" breaker bar is 17" long and should afford even more clearance if it's strong enough.

BUT, your welding two wrenches together will work without a problem. It's just not going to work as well as a breaker bar if you can fit it in the space.

I build and modify tools all the time.

Here is a peg wrench I made to get my stabilizer cylinder gland nut off. I have since modified and reinforced it to remove a larger gland nut and kept it's original functionality intact.

Here is a wire wheel knockoff wrench from an MG I modified to remove the oil screen in the tank of my backhoe.

I have been wrong before and no doubt in the future ,this job looks tough even with the best wrench in the world .If I see correctly it appears that those are c-lock nuts and will be hard to turn all the way, for his sake I hope I am wrong.

Yeah, they are. It just takes time and will do over the winter. One ratcheting box wrench and one extra long box wrench and it's OK.
