Help setting up tractor for multiple attachements

You need a quick attach for your 3 point hitch. Like this one

Attaching the pto shaft to the tractor can be a pain. You need a fair amount of upper body strength and a pair of strong hands, especially if you have a pto coupling with the button-type release that you work with your thumb. A better choice is the pto shaft with the slide-collar locking mechanism which allows you to use both hands to get the pto shaft attached to the tractor.

One little trick that an make PTO shaft hookups a little easier is to suspend the PTO shaft from a bungee cord to take the weight of the shaft off of your arms while you fiddle around getting the splines lined up and the coupler slid on to the PTO stub on the tractor. You will be surprised how much this can help. PTO shafts and all 3 of the coupler methods are pretty much an invention of the Devil, but with some "tricks" like keeping everything greased and deburred, and a lot of practice you will not hate them quite so much as you will at first.

I recommend a quick hitch also. If you will be unavailable or working out of town make sure the genset is hooked up before you leave out. Really it is a matter of choosing what is the priority implement to leave attached.

FWIW, Deere does offer an Auto Hitch which is a quick hitch with pto connection included. Should work with most 3ph brands and may make it easier to deal with the pto. Some set up would be required to make this work for you. Worth looking into imo.

You know I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet so I will. I think your best all around solution would be to buy a second tractor, you know to make it simple for your wife that is. Of course being that it would be used in winter you should probably make sure it has a cab with heat and a radio and other such "necessities".

One of the first tricks I learned with my BX2660 was to go to see on TBN what they do and realized it was easy to attach a few casters to a pallet or a few boards and make rolling dollies for my equipment .....the second best advice it took me three years to come across was that it was way easier to align the pto shaft splines with the rear pto splines by putting the PTO shift lever in mid pto position so that I could turn by hand the rear pto shaft. Another very helpful aspect was to replace the turnbuckles stabilizers that you bust your knuckles on loosening and tightening........... with pinned sliding adjustable stabilizers they are so much easier and even hold the three point hitch wide open so you can back up close right away. I got mine from a weblink I found on TBN but I think he no longer makes them.........but there are others out there.

My genset arrive today. It's heavier than I thought. I got a imd 16kw with AVR.

Problem is.. the shaft is a bit long. So........
Do I get it cut down to fit on the genset or leave it long and not connect it to the tractor via 3pt. I think...(at the moment) of going the dolly route. If I have wheels on it with brakes it should not move? I'm not looking at hauling the genset anywhere... just role it out.
Thoughts on this??

Second issue....
It seems that I am having trouble connecting that pto shaft. I can get the one to click in on the tractor.. but on the genset the collar doesn't snap in. I have tried it with both ends.. same results.. so I think its not the pto shaft...
I had a lot of trouble getting my hand in there around the guards.. so perhaps I just didn't get it right. I'll give it another shot. I'm assuming that it should click in there like my belly mower right?

you are going to need some way to secure that generator good to the ground if you don't attach it to the 3 point. The PTO shaft will attempt to spin the entire generator around in the dirt. There is a lot of resistance in the generator head (several horsepower's worth) and it may be easier for it to flop the generator around on the ground than spin the generator head.

You must make sure that the PTO couplers on both ends are securely attached by attempting to pull them off. DO NOT FIRE IT UP WITHOUT DOING THIS! If your PTO shaft comes off of the generator head, you will have a nasty "tiger by the tail". whirling around in a big circle at 540 RPM. You are not going to like it one bit.

I have decided to put it on dollies.

My idea will be to put it on casters with brakes and then attach it to 2x6 and plywood. I'm hoping that will prevent any type of spin, but at the same time allow for easy operations.

Thoughts on that idea?
