Skidding Winches

This is not the bla bla safety police, but how come you dont hook to the trailer hitch?
Because I'd have to keep putting the ball on and off the winch/hitch, more than one time each day, as needed...

Why go through that, when I don't have to??

ALSO, this way I go to the field, drop the trailer, (fast) load it, lift it with the winch, (fast) and head to deliver the bales...

10-4 on the quick and easy. How much do one of those bails weigh?

Anyone using a 3 point logging grapple instead of a winch? Something like a wallenstein or valby log grapple?

Great question Piston, I've often wondered why they aren't more folks using the logging grapples. I've had my eye out for a used Wallenstein for awhile but they're rare and the ones I have found are either all welded up of within a few hundred of new.

I built this one, with a winch also.

Rusty, that looks great! I also wonder why you don't see many around, I think a lot of people are skeptical of them. I haven't talked with too many people who actually own and use them but the ones who do seem to like them. Of course, it only works well I imagine if you can actually back up to the logs.

I'm gonna have to find one and put it to the test just to see for myself!

You know we both have the same disease right , if I could find a way to justify one I'd already have it. You on the other hand have the mill and the NH land. You gotta take this one for the team!

Haha...seriously, a disease it is!!! Sometimes I wonder if I took the wrong career path and should have done something in forestry instead! Perhaps if I did this stuff every day I wouldn't enjoy it so much.

Fine, I'll take this one for the team! Wallenstein it is...

I'm in the process of building a grapple. The majority of my cutting is on fence lines or close enough that I can back up to the tree. There was a used Wallenstein around here for sale this past winter but the moron wanted a grand more than new price for it. Mine is a scaled down and less elegant version of Rusty's

I went out to NY this past weekend for some non tractor fun, and ended up picking this up on the way home..

Nice find Piston, that looks like a fairlead for a winch also. We need some more pics, and on your tractor!!
Any ID tags or stickers on it?

Fun times ahead Piston. Should be interesting. Like Rusty says - pics when you get them

Sweet find Piston, now I can't wait to return the rake just to check the new toy out!!!👍

Unfortunately, I had to take off for work for a few weeks this morning, and just picked it up yesterday. I didn't even have time to take it off the trailer, so there it sits waiting for me to get home.

The only pics I have are of it on the trailer like that, just different angles. It's an iron and oak logging grapple, I want to say model SB-02 for some reason. There is an ID plate on it and I even have the original owners manual.

The former owner had a hydraulic Ramsey winch on it and made the fair lead. He kept the winch though. If I can find one somewhere cheap I may buy one, otherwise I might mount my cheapo electric winch just for rare occasions. I really don't expect to do much winching with it.

And yes Matt, we will finally be able to have a beer and chat about all these fun toys!

My neighbor has a Wallenstein log grapple. I think it would be great if you have property that you can just back right up to the trees. The grapple wouldn't work for me as I have all hills and need to pull from a distance. He doesn't use it as much as I thought he would. I have actually pulled a few trees out for him to grab in couple of places.
But I still wouldn't mind having one for the right price.

Found a winch for my new to me M5640. It is a well used 2003 Farmi JL501. The splines on the tractor end of the pto shaft were mangled like it spun off the tractor pto during a hard pull and the yoke on the winch end was jammed into the winch. I replaced the mangled yoke on the tractor end and pulled the jammed shaft off of the winch and now every think works as it should. Pulls like a banchi. The clutch has never been adjusted. The original marks across the adjusting nut and shaft are still aliened and the paint there is in tact. It could use a new roller chain - it is a little loose and the adjustment is maxed out. Other than that A-OK. You can't beat a Farmi.

Wow Gordon, nice find!! How sweet to have two different sized tractors both set up with nicely matched winches.

I'm not sure exactly why it reminds me of this, but it's a bit like those bumper stickers that say "my other car is a Porsche". Makes me want a Porsche so i can put a sticker on it that says "my other car is also a Porsche".

To be honest though, Id much rather have your two tractors than a sports car.

i have a fx 90 and 3/8 cable. A buddy of mine is using this new rope rather than cable in his winch. any thoughts or experience with this?

My concern would be how abrasion resistant it is. We tried the ropes in the mining environment for towing and they got chewed up quickly from use. They were light and easily handled though.

Sun light eats the ropes up too, along with abrasion problems...

You won't be seeing one on my winch...
