The cold freezing temperatures probably did a number on lots of budding fruit trees this morning
Yesterday I made the orchard rounds, and found pear, peach and apple "babies". But not many. Many trees don't look like they will produce this year, not only because they are young, but this freeze probably took out half of the flowers/buds, and what recovered is dealing with this morning's chill.
But my assumption is if I can see a tiny little fruit under the flower, then the deed is done, and that fruit will grow.

My best tree is a Kiefer pear, loaded with pears, such that I'll have to thin some. Now thinning is a great job because you are already so ahead of the game, the fruit is there! Just too much of it on one stem usually.

Good morning all. 20 here this morning and it's supposed to go to 53 and be sunny. This long cold slow spring is getting to long for me. I am needing some porch setting time. Porch setting is better than a nap in some ways. My wife and I will just sit and talk a little, looking at how the trees have changed or the clouds shapes. Just seeing the beauty of God's handy work. After a bit we will talk some more and eventually we might talk about things that are a little deeper. Then we go back to the light things and just set a while. We watch the birds and might even see a critter or two.
We have tried porch setting when we had our coats on and blankets wrapped around our legs bu it just ain't the same.
Hope you all have a great day. Ed

24 going to 56 today. Had a bit of everything coming down yesterday, especially dead tree branches from the wind.

Pie sounds good here, too.

We call them crawfish, too, toppop. but I hear crawdad, and crayfish about as often. We have them down by our creek...love those "castles" they build. Imitation crawfish make great flies for smallies, and the real things, too, of course.

Heading over to the Virginia Flyfishing and Wine Festival today...a little something for me (fishing) and the wife (wine). They moved it from Waynesboro to Doswell (the state fairgrounds) this year, so much closer, but I'll miss the trip to the mountains. Lefty Kreh, one of the "godfathers" of flyfishing will be there again speaking and teaching casting...he's a real hoot - and 90 years old.

Ed, you are clearly a man of Faith, and that's good. While you ponder the universe on your porch, I look into the sky at night, and where I live now, there are a million stars "up there". And I realize what an insignificant speck I am. But hey, even us specks do ok...;) We try hard not to talk about faith in this thread and I say that at times as one of the worst offenders. Politics and religion can get so polarizing and upsetting. If you ever go into "Friendly Politics" and come out with elevated blood pressure you will understand.

Ed, do you both have rocking chairs? A warm evening, a glass of iced tea on the table, and your little part of this whole world in front of you. All very good.
I have a big front porch too and during the summer, the sun is on the other side of the house, so it's nice sitting out there. Except for the bugs. This year, I have a zapper going in for the mosquitoes.
Only while I'm sitting out there, don't want to incinerate too many good bugs.
But when that Zika bug comes homing in, I want it to meet my friendly little toaster.

Smithfield low salt bacon. Very fatty, surprised. Must have gotten an end. Coming out of the pan shortly so maybe its taste will make up for it.

24 right now...high of 43 clear and windy today.
Missed TBN yesterday...made an early dump run and got a haircut. Then, watched a "House" marathon with the dog most of the day yesterday.

Today...puttering around, that's it.

got down to 30 degrees for about five hours, now back up to 34
Perhaps I should have burned smudge pots in the orchard.
Good way to make friends with the adjacent neighbors....
I've heard spraying water helps, various covers, helicopters it seems, fans, but
smudge pots seem to be the old fashioned way. Probably outlawed due
to pollution. Anyone ever use one? That smoke residue can't be healthy...

Good Morning! 54F @ 5:30AM. Rain showers this morning with overcast skies during the afternoon hours. Thunder possible. High 66F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

0.01" of rain yesterday, 0.05" today so far. More all bark and no bite.

They say "eat dessert first" Eric. Sounds like pie would be a great way to start a Sunday morning.

Gave the green light on the Vanagon project yesterday. Now to get busy on the details.

45 this morning and headed to 67 today.

Well helper was a no call no show. Figures. Wife finally getting to see her oldest nephew's true colors. So now I'm a day behind from saving something for him to do. Heaters have to come on today. So I have 4 houses of feed to pack and feedlines to run.

Maybe I'll get to service the generator today.

Sadly wintery mix here. So no seat time today. Drinking second cup of coffee and reading up here. Likely will go out to the barn later and let the horses out when the sleet stops. Then maybe a third cup of coffee.

Got to start planning the outdoor riding arena. Trying to decide about the base layer. Figuring out how much gravel to purchase is a pain in the butt. Also arena measured in meters. No one here in the US understands meters.

First cup of coffee has been poured. 64° with partly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 67° with mix of sun and clouds (Page, AZ.). Every thing is packed. Ready to head out in about a hour. Weather may turn bad as we pass through Flagstaff. Other than that it should be a good travel day.
Good Morning All.

They make great large mouth bass bait, especially in ponds where they see them often.

We got really lucky, only below freezing for about 2 hours total and 31° was the coldest we got. I lost some peaches the other day, but my apples haven't bloomed and the pears just started. Looks like a stretch of reasonable weather now. Yesterday at the Tee ball game, there were 3 hail storms, rain and wind. What a mess!

I find it interesting that T Ball is gaining popularity. When I was young, that was a east coast, urban thing. I guess it helped that we had plenty of space for baseball diamonds.

28F and overcast with snow flurries @ 11:00 ... was 20F when I hit the rack around 03:00 ...

For the second night in a row I managed to make it back up to the shop after dinner. Temp when I got up there yesterday morning was 56F which was a welcome surprise.

Got all the welding done yesterday for the brush guard on the lower frame/jaw. Can't say it was a whole lot of fun ... a good bit of it was overhead, with me lying on my back, catching hot boogers as they fell ...

Almost out of welding gas, so I may not be doing much welding today.

Grapple thread updated.
