Having trouble with the internet at home, but I'm baffled and don't know what to do at this point.

I have Verizon cell 4G LTE. On the laptop, IE won't even connect to homepage (Yahoo). Firefox will, and loads Yahoo just fine. I can click on and load any Yahoo article, and do searches. But as soon as I try to open an outside page it times out. The IPad does the exact same thing, only Yahoo will load. I brought both the laptop and IPad to work, and they worked fine on the WiFi here. Took them back home, and nothing. It makes me think it's an internet problem, yet I can't say the internet doesn't work. Has anyone dealt with something like this?

Thanks

I am not an expert but it sounds like you have a router problem. What generally works for me is to plug everything, router and modem, wait a few minutes, turn it on and try again.

What do you mean by you have Verizon Cell 4G LTE? Do you have a WiFi Hotspot or are you using your phone as a Hotspot?

I have no idea about causes, but I have Charter cable and I, too, periodically have to unplug power to the router, as I did day before yesterday, but in my case it's no connection to the Internet, not a partial connection. And I even have to unplug power to the modem occasionally. But such things are usually no ore often that once every 2 or 3 months.

Those pages that you see could be cached. So your seeing something that was saved to your computer. Try what Deere Dude said, unplug the router, wait a few then plug it back in. This fixes a lot of problems.

Guys, I'm not sure he even has a router since he said he is using Verizon 4G LTE.

Verizon 4G LTE is a service they offer rural customers, but it’s nearly impossible to find on their website. There’s a canister style antenna mounted to my house, and a cable runs to a router inside the house. It uses cell towers.
I had thought about the pages being cached, but they’re up to date, and if I click on a Yahoo link it loads fine. I’m going to try unplugging and plugging back in. Thanks for the ideas.

Edit: I think I had the name wrong, though it’s the only thing I’ve ever seen on my paperwork. But I think it’s called Homefusion Broadband. Here's a link that shows the router and canister.

Can you ping 8.8.8.8 ?
Thats a google server.
If you can, the problem is likely a browser or firewall setting and not an equipment issue.

I’m at work right now, so I’ll have to check it out tonight.
But to be honest, I don’t know what that means.

Ping is a DOS Command, the procedure can be different depending on the Operating System you have. Keep in mind all of the Internet sites you go to are assigned an IP address like 8.8.8.8. But so you don't have to remember IP addresses a system called DNS resolves the name to an IP address. You can also ping google.com if you so desire.

Ping is a request sent to the target prompting it to respond. Some sites will not respond even though they receive the request. Most will do.

Press "Windows" key. Type in cmd press Enter.
DOS prompt will open
type in
ping 8.8.8.8 or ping google.com or ping yahoo.com or ping any other IP address or URL.
You can also type in ipconfig
IPv4 is your own IP address
Default gateway is address your modem or router.

It could be that those pages are cached and it is only updating the changes? and has enough connection to do that without timing out. Normally resetting the modem/router does the trick. Not sure how its wired, but could there be a loose/corroded connection, I've had that problem before too.

rebooting is a good first step, both the router, and the computer. I use verizon 4G LTE with a simple little mifi sitting on the table beside me. you need the antenna setup if you have a weak verizon signal. sometimes they take cell towers down for maintenance, so if your antenna is aimed at a particular tower and it goes down, you will be out until they bring it back up. That should not happen very often, but does at times.

Folks, he said the pages he is seeing are current pages, so they aren't cached.

IE gets a blanks screen.

Firefox gets a Yahoo screen.

Yahoo loads. Articles within Yahoo load. Yahoo searches bring back results.

As soon as he clicks on any link outside of Yahoo, he gets nothing.

Something is preventing him from getting out of Yahoo.

The devices do this only within his house.

The devices work on another network outside of his house.

My first guess would be its a DNS issue with his router inside his house.

DNS matches names with IP addresses. Kinda like a phone book.

If powering down the router, waiting 5 minutes, then powering it up again, waiting another 5 minutes and testing does not resolve it, AND if he's not familiar with DNS, PING, looking at, diagnosing and modifying his router settings, etc... his fastest way to a solution would be to call his Internet Service Provider.

I appreciate all the advice. I'm going to try to "reboot" the router when I get home. If that doesn't work, I'll update Monday when I get back to work.

Vote for DNS resolution issue also, restart of router should refresh it's dns provider addresses, then subsequent restart of the pc's may refresh the dns server entries there. Mossroad is right, at that point, get your ISP support involved, they presumably manage that router on your behalf, and ultimately thats the most likely place for the issue that is impacting you.

The DOS command "tracert" would give a better idea of how far one is getting outside the house or outside the internet provider if the ISP or technician needs better information on the problem.
A "tracert ohio.com" or "tracert cleveland.com" or "tracert rr.com" seems to be consistent and help provide information if asked by the ISP or technician. Hope you figure it out.

You have what is called a "Fusion" system from Verizon. I had it for several years. Generally worked ok but from time to time would act up. Re-booting the router doesn't always work but re-booting the "Cantenna" can solve problems frequently. Unplug the power to the Cantenna for at least thirty seconds, and the router too. Then plug it all back in. This often forces the Cantenna to download and install any updates to its firmware. That just may do it. If it doesn't, what also works is to wait a week and see if the problem goes away. That has happened to me a number of times. When problems down at the cell tower or point of presence on the Internet backbone pop up, they won't tell you, you have to wait them out sometimes.
Even if this procedure does not fix this particular problem, it will fix problems that are likely to occur at some future date. So keep it in mind next time fishyness happens.
