Right it takes certain amount of spring loaded torque resistance before the "impacting action" engages. There a quite a few videos online showing how most work. Seems people love to take things apart hey

Some describe it as being a both a "hit" (in the forward movement when spring preload releases the weight mass and rotational "hammering" as the lugs engage and spin with the motor. The first action is what is supposed to keep the bit securely engaged in the screw head so it doesn't cam out as it turns.


Impact drivers have their advantages all right but they sure can be noisy in certain circumstances. I now often find myself enjoying using my 1/4 hex screwdriver simply because it is quiet driving in a screw.

But all that noise does keep my boss away. :confused2:

Noticeably to me is the less powerful the impact driver the more engagement you will probably experience. My little 2462 12v driver will impact almost constantly driving a 2 1/2 screw in 2x4 pine but the 18V Milwaukee FUEL on setting #2 or #3 will seat one with no impact engagement at all until you bury the head deep.

And talking about the rat-a-tat tat noise common when using an impact driver I see Rigid Tool has oil actuated pulse driver aptly called the STEALTH

Well since this thread started, I did get a hold of some cheapie hex shanked twist drill bits to try the largest was only 1/4 inch but I did run it thru some 2x4 wood using several different impact drivers, brushed and brushless models in both 12V and 18V designs. For the most part the impacting action didn't even kick in much for me at that size and when it did the xtra chattering really seemed more of nuisance than anything else I could tell from that little experience.


I just now stumbled upon this very recent video using the new Milwaukee Red Helix Shockwave bits for impact use...and for metal drilling!

Impressive video. I'd be interested in knowing more about long term durabiity for those bits when used in impact mode.

I've seen several of the reviews on that guy's channel. He's very effective as a pitchman, even if he's not trying to be one. But I just keep having flashbacks to "Vince" the Shamwow Guy. :laughing: That's actually high praise.

Much better tool reviews than the Tools in Action fools do. He has done some really in depth performance testing on the those High Torque 1/2 impact wrenches the industry has to offer.

I just watched another fairly new one from the same guy that compares the side by side performance of the Milwaukee Gen 1 Fuel hammer drill (I have one) against the brand new Gen 2 release. I found very interesting to watch especially if anyone thinks they might feel the need to upgrade. And the current price of Gen 1 tools has dropped considerably now

I've never seen someone drill so many holes in my life! :laughing:
