Here's one that would be a mouthful for a single lid grapple

Great example. No problem with a single lid. See photos below of similar awkward sized stumps and debris being grappled with a 48" grapple which has only a 18" or so wide lid.

Sorry, you are 1) confused and 2) nobody elected you editor of the conversation.

You obviously cannot tell what relative size the tractors and grapple are. My tractor is a Kioti DK40se with KL401 loader and lifts over 300lbs more at PP than a MX4700/LA844. My grapple is probably lighter than your double lid (the Millonzi is about 300lbs) so net lift capacity might be 500lbs more. Look at the short lower tines on your grapple compared to mine. Your relatively short grapple makes the object in it look large. The stump photo I posted with the red truck in the background is an oak that I could barely lift and you could not have lifted (posted again below). It is considerably bigger than the stump in your grapple. Photo of oak stump still in the ground before grappling below for reference. Also, not only are my bottom tines longer but my jaw opening looks bigger too (42++) so your stump is not really bigger it's just an optical illusion. I've put in a photo of my grapple jaw opening (when mounted on a smaller tractor).

It was too big for me to lift out of the hole. I had to use the BH to drag it up to ground level then had to knock dirt off it before I could finally lift it.

I could lift that with my 50" single lid 400 lb grapple better than my 74" dual lid 1000 lb grapple. Less weight means more lift and the lids only hold the load steady on the bottom L tines. You only really need 1 lid in my experienced opinion for 95% of loads.

I never said anything about weight, only large bulky objects. 95% is probably accurate. The moral of the story is buy or make what you want, in my case I made mine from a stacking rake that I already had. I use mine to make a living, I dig out stumps and remove trees w/ excavator and move the debris w/ tractor.

In the beginning, we only had a dual lid, so I didn't like to hear debates about single vs. double.
Now that we have both, I kinda like it!

I've read numerous discussions about it. There are probably a half dozen in this thread alone, but I don't think anyone's opinion ever clearly wins the discussion.

One thing is obvious. You guys are very passionate about grapples, and I share that passion with you!
I wanna keep this thread alive for a long time so I can eventually see a Wicked Grapple on the front of all your tractors!!

I'm still wondering how the 5% of loads that apparently cannot be secured with a single lid managed to get into my brush pile. Must be some sort of leprechaun with a double lid grapple who comes around at night and finishes my work.

There is a reason we evolved with a single thumb on each hand. Or, if you prefer, that God gave his most perfect creation a single thumb.

On a more serious note, I think double lids are a holdover from skid steer grapples which are almost always wide (72-84") and used often to clean up bits and pieces of construction debris. CUT grapples evolved from commercial skid steer grapples so it isn't surprising some still have two lids even though CUT grapples more often deal with brush, logs, stumps etc where a single lid is fine.

TBN members complain about pretty much any deficiency in implements but I don't recall a single complaint about a stump or other load that couldn't be easily contained with a single lid. There have been complaints about opening width, weight, manufacturing quality (not EA) and a few other things but not inadequate number of lids.

I much prefer the design and proportion of the EA lid over what I have but I can honestly testify that in ten years I've never had an object my loader could lift that I couldn't clamp in my single lid grapple.

A wider dual lid actually stabilizes imbalanced/irregular/offset loads better. More square inches of piston area (two cylinders over one) means greater clamping force as well.

I've never said anything about a CUT. I have a full size utility tractor.

Island, you keep talking about thumbs. How about changing that discussion to mittens? Your single lid is like a mitten, while a dual is like a glove. We "evolved" (not really) to have 4 independently actuated fingers in addition to our opposable thumb - why is that? Why not just one finger and one thumb? Can you not grasp more firmly around uneven objects using multiple fingers? YES, you can.
