How much HP do I need?

I have really enjoyed the benefits of HST with the mx5100. However, I agree with what you are saying. I like how my mx5100 can work like a skid steer. But as you go bigger the HST loses it's appeal. Not only does it eat up engine power, I am also concerned about long term maintenance. Replacing an HST pump is probably insanely expensive. So if I go bigger I think I will consider moving away from HST.

I have an L with the HST and its a great loader/chore tractor. I really didn't like it when running a mower or pulling a ground driven manure spreader. Downhill and level it was mostly ok, uphill was not possible to keep the ground speed that I wanted. It sounds like you are at the bare minimum for your pto needs at the moment. some manufacturers make "orchard" models that are bigger engines in smaller frames for just your needs it sounds like.

When you go bigger, you don't have a choice with regard to HST. Unless something has changed, HST isn't an option.

The engine doesn't turn the PTO 1 to 1. My PTO turns at 540 rpm @ 2700 engine rpm and 180 rpm @ 1000 engine rpm.

Thanks for the input and ideas. What happens is when I start up the hill, the pto rpm starts dropping off, as I back off the speed pedal the pto rpm comes back up. I am delivering enough chemical & Airblast but I am not going fast enough so I am wasting chemical and probably over dosing the trees. It's similar to hitting deep grass when you are mowing, you can do it by slowing down. However, mowing just involves ground speed & blade speed. Spraying involves ground speed, chemical delivery (pump), and blower (Airblast). The pump only uses 2 or 3 hp, the blower is the hog. It's a real balancing act.
Kubota makes two low profile models but you don't see many of them. I think the small one is a m9960 (100hp) and maybe the other is a m108. Either one is very expensive. I don't think messing with the fuel will make enough difference. I think I need to bite the bullet and get a 7040 non HST. While I'm at it I may as well get a cab to protect me from all the chemicals. I currently use rain gear and a full face motorcycle helmet. I might just look for an older 2wd ag tractor with a lot of hp & keep the mx5100 for mowing. That way I won't have to be reconnecting things all the time. I think $15000 would buy a nice used 2 wd tractor.

Couldn't you reduce the sprayer output and spray everything slower? Certainly not an ideal solution, but it doesn't empty your bank account.

We do very little work on the hydro's compared to the gear drives. I don't mean just clutches as I always cringe while hearing a lb of gears being ground off from people who don't know how to drive a gear drive!!!

Everything is being sprayed slower / less when the engine rpm drops (i.e. ground speed, PTO speed, and thus pump speed and blower speed all reduce by the same percentage when the engine rpms drop)
Only when operator "shifts" (i.e. lets up on hydro pedal for the engine and PTO rpm's to return) is he spraying a lot more (compared to the ground speed he's traveling) than he was before.

Having watched clients who worked with ag chemicals suffer health problems, no matter what the MDSS's might not tell you, I would get the cab! You will still need the appropriate respirator, I'd think, but at least your skin won't be dosed. You will be glad as the years go by and you stay healthier.

My Mx5100 is a HST and I try to spray at 2.5 mph. That happens to be low range full pedal on my tractor. My tank holds 300 gallon of water which weighs 2400# plus I estimate the sprayer weighs 1600#. So I am pulling about 4000# plus the weight of the tractor. This set up sort of works on level ground. As my trees have grown it has become a little harder to blast the chemical through them. Also, I should say my Rears sprayer is awesome. The blades are adjustable, I have them in the low position, I wouldn't mind moving them to the middle range, but the mx5100 can't make 540 rpm on the pto in that position. The sprayer also has a two speed gearbox, I have to run it in low range to make 540 rpm at the pto. So the sprayer has plenty to give if you have enough hp. My trees are semi dwarf so I don't need to blow the leaves off the trees. But I need to make sure I am blowing the chemical thru the tree against a 3 or 4 mph wind. I am thinking another 10 hp might get me up the hill. The 7040 would give me some margin but I just think that tractor is huge.

The one additional piece of information I needed to calculate is what speed you are dropping to on the hills. (grade of the hill would also take some guess work out for me).

Although probably easier just to demo tractors until you find one that does the job how you want it to. I wouldn't be surprised if you want to pump up more than you think in hp - especially since it sounds like your sprayer can take a lot more.
