JD 5045d Problem

Looking at your last couple of posts. I take you have the tractor home now. Can you shift gears on the go? What was the issue with the brakes? Can you take the bucket off?

Did a search tractor spline wrench. Not sure there is room for this on 5000, but it is a start on an idea to make one with maybe an offset handle.

I can shift 1,2,3 on the go but must stop to shift between ranges (a minor inconvenience).
The brake issue is resolved but too embarrassing to post.
I ran the PTO for about 5 minutes, disengaged, shut off the engine & put all levers in neutral.
The PTO finally rotates by hand, not easily but that perceived problem is now resolved.
I probably expected the same ease of turning I had with the old 1070 shaft which spun with fingertip pressure.
This new one requires a strong, full handed grip, but doable.
So far, most of the problems originated from my inexperience from working with my first new tractor.

Except I think a 5045D doesn't have a parking brake.

The 5045D does have a parking brake but I relied on the JD service manager who went to great length about an internal band brake that set whenever the clutch is depressed.
I deferred to his superior knowledge and continued operating in with park brake locked.
Fortunately no more than 20 minutes total and no damage occurred.

Unreliable advice and vastly overpriced parts have led me away from the local dealer to another in Gonzales La. (Ascension Equipment).
I also found an old codger less than a mile away who used to work at the local JD dealership.
His name is Roy Rogers (really!)
Typical crotchety loner with old tractors in the weeds and ugly dogs on the front porch, but he clearly understands tractors.

Hello Slide rule,
I don't think leaving the parking brake on should be a subject too embarrassing to post about. I'll admit to doing it on more than one occasion as I think most honest operators would. Besides, you have a pretty good excuse with a service manager like that. Good luck with your new tractor and I hope you enjoy it.

Has anyone found an effective, workable location for a cup holder on the 5045D?

You'll make a big mess if you try to change filter w/o draining.

I've never lost more than a quart or so of fluid changing only the filter in multiple 5 series tractors.
