As with all welding, proper joint prep is your friend!

Notice how Michael walks the cup in the bevel of the pipe? In all the Navy yards here in the Puget Sound area that is a big The Navy believes the cup will contaminate the weld!

Interesting - dang I was almost going pro with that technique! The cup contacts the bevel behind the puddle though. He also recommends using soapstone to reduce friction where the cup touches.

When the USS Thresher sank in 1963, it turned the Navy's welding program upside down.
In the 1970s I took a stainless steel pipe welding class at Olympic college in Bremerton. The teacher was a P1 high pressure Tig welder in PSNS. He told me he would not accept a pipe joint that the gap varied more than 0.10 of an inch all the way around the pipe.:shocked:

Here's a technique I always wanted to learn. To late for me now, I don't have the eye sight for it. Boiler Makers do it on the tubes in boilers. Guys who weld in the submarines do it too. Anywhere that you can't get to the back side of the pipe.

When welding 6-G pipe with the Tig process, you have to be equally good with both hands.
When welding the right side of the pipe, the Tig torch is in your left hand. When welding the left side of the pipe, the Tig torch is in your right hand.
