Silverado gets new facelift for 2016

I tend to buy Ford or Dodge based on the mechanical end more than cosmetics. I wonder if that's the reason most buyers go Ford?? I also wonder what the sales numbers are for Ford versus GM trucks?? Someone reading this thread surely knows that information or where to find it.

With that said, for decades I've thought the GMC trucks are more cosmetically appealing than Chevys. If buying a GM truck I'd never choose the Chevy in any of the models.

Fords look wicked. Chevys look like a refrigerator. That's about all there is to it.

If you are talking pre-2015 1/2 tons, then I somewhat agree, that the Ford is better looking, although the GM is not bad. Loved the tough look of the previous body style F150. The new aluminum bodies are toned down, lowered and come with smaller weenie tires. Not a fan anymore, though I'd like to see how rust resistant they are in the next 5-7 yrs.

For HD trucks, I still love the looks of the GMs. Especially the GMCs.

I feel that I can be much more objective now that I own both brands and have a 2014 F150 for my company vehicle! :)

actually quite the opposite....................Ford continues with its slab side refrigerator box side fenders and ridiculous looking headlights with an eye brow line below the lamp that ends abruptly and on a weird angle......I guess they needed something to not look the same as front end of Toyota , so they threw in the lower eyebrow......

So it must be their mechanical superiority that sells so many Fords??

Surely, you jest!

Don't see any smiley faces do you?? I'm asking serious technical questions. Why would you suggest Ford's sales numbers are so high??

The reason Ford out sells Chevrolet is because they are cheaper, and if Dodge continues to undercut them they will eventually outsell Ford. HS

Marketing. When you think of trucks, ford stands out in your mind. Take the average Joe that has never owned a truck before, doesn't know half the stuff about them like we do. It's highly likely that the one thing he does know is that Ford is popular and had the best selling truck for years, it's also likely that is where he's going to go shopping first. A lot of people are patriotic and like buying American as much as possible and Ford and Tundra have the most American parts of any of the trucks. You also take a lot of current Ford owners probably went with Ford cause their dad or granddad drove Ford and that's all they know. Me, I'm the opposite, my grandpa was a GMC man and dad was Chevy so that's what I've been driving my whole life besides a few Toyotas here and there.

'Cuz "Fords look Wicked, Chevys look like refrigerators". I'm referring back to 2014 and earlier, also to be fair I'm comparing chevys to a "stylish refrigerator", not run-of-the-mill.

PS smiley faces included here :D

I think I started to like the look of Fords more when the Raptor was created. I still pat myself on the back for walking past them at the dealership. My F150 is still pristine but I shudder to think what it will look like in 10 years. If I had a Raptor I'd have to build a special garage for it. I see more Chevys & Dodges "lifted" with big tires etc though.

I think Fords are more reliable than Chevy or Dodge but don't have any data. I see more of them used as work trucks. Seems that municipalities choose them and I hope reliability is a significant component (for my tax dollar). Can't think of how to find this info on the internet. When I look for info in the internet I'm always thinking "who was paid to create and publish this info, and how much did it cost to place it on page1 of my search"?

When I was looking at new trucks Chevys were quite a bit more expensive than Fords.

With regards to the original post,,,,,I think the 2016 Ford looks too much like the 2016 Silverado (the double decker grille version).

Hmmmmm.... I'll have to investigate that. I don't believe that to be true. But I haven't shopped for a new truck either.

Friend of mine is a salesman for Ford, GM and Dodge. Out of 10 truck sales, he says 4 are Ford, 3 are Dodge and 3 are GM. He also keeps me posted on highest selling price for trucks. The current record is $67,800 and that was a Ford.

Most trucks sold in my community are HD trucks. Dodge is in the race because of Cummins.

Funny thing, Ford has had diesel engine problems since late 2004. But they still outsell the other two in HD diesel trucks. Why would that be??

maybe the Ford owners need to replace their trucks more often :) and trade in simplicity back at dealer .......... and brand loyalty trumps

I imagine Walmart sells the most disposable diapers in North America, but it doesn't mean they have the best disposables.

I've always heard the Ford F150 is the top seller among all vehicles. True? ..... I never checked ...

I bought my first Chevy truck last June having been a diehard Ford man forever. This time, I was looking mostly for a "good looking" truck rather than a worker. I do believe the Fords are better built but the Chevys tend to more readily catch my eye. Someone just compared the Chevys to a refrigerator but I've always said Fords look like a box of cereal.

Certainly, my new 2015 Siverado 2500 HD has some go-jo but mostly it's just a driver. That is, until my 2001 F150 gives up the ghost ... but, with only 190K miles, it should make another 10 years.

I think your look at the market is exactly what we see here. Toyota is strong second to the F150 in the 1/2 ton.

Ford has been dominant in the HD segment for a reason.

I started out a GM guy. That left a bad taste in my mouth and my second attempt at a GM truck was even a bigger disaster. I have owned two GM cars. One was a great vehicle, the other was not unreliable but sure nickel and dimed me to death.

If it's a Triton v8 you will only want to run it to 250,000miles. After that they go a little further but then you will put a good chunk of money into plugs coil wires. Good luck even finding a mechanic to work on it

looks like a brick with a windshield tacked on the top. got to have all the aerodynamics of a brick also.

I think brand loyalty has a lot more impact on truck sales than cars. Ford went at the truck market a lot more seriously than Chevy for years and I think a lot of people still see them as a leader, with efforts like the Eco-boost and aluminum. Although I have a Dodge right now, I'm going back to Ford. It's history. My father had a 1955 Chevy truck that was an unmitigated disaster. As soon as he could afford it he switched to Fords and had great trucks. In the 70's he tried a Chevy again and it was a lemon. Back to Ford. I had a couple of good Fords, tried the Dodge. It's OK but I'd rather have a Ford. I'm sure all the trucks have their positive points, but Ford has been building the brand for almost 70 years, since the F-1 and it's paid off for them.

I'm wondering when trucks will lose the "big front end thing" that Dodge started in 1994. I'm not saying it wasn't a clever sales tactic to make them look like a "big rig" but that is a lot of wind swept area to over come. To make an aerodynamic truck, a design would lose the big rig look. Ford tackled the fuel mileage thing by making their trucks lighter and still keeping the front end. As long as they all don't start looking like the Jeep Cherokee, I wouldn't mind a more aero looking truck.

I'm not in a brand war at all. Could care less which one is best. Just interested in discussing what drives sales.

My truck is 15 yrs old with 196K miles and works like a champ. Figure it's got another 4-5 yrs in it before expensive repairs. Pulls a GN 20K trailer 30% of the time.

I always struggle with buyers that base their decision on looks. :)
