76F dry & clear today. Nice stretch of weather ahead for the next 4 days.

Today's task is getting the bush hog ready to use. It's the only thing that has to sit outside, which I don't like but have to live with. The mower has had a hard life for the past 11 years. I don't put that many hours on it but they are hard hours. If I finish my field project before the end of the universe it would be nice to get a mower dedicated to mowing cleared areas. A flail mower might fit in the garage. The bush hog is roughly 6'-6" X 11' overall which is a lot of floor space.

The price of being able to read the news, is reading the news. :laughing: I guess it also depends on what one considers to be worthy news but whilst on my way to those topics it is hard to miss the unworthy news headlines.

Having been closely involved with news breaking stories in my past, it always comes across as what will sell and make them money, not the truth. And it is quick to convict someone with big headlines, but retractions are little fine print in back. My nephew still has a hard time finding work and he was proven innocent of all crimes, but the headlines still pop up.

We don't watch TV news and I don't miss that circus. I have an online NYT newspaper subscription which I find useful due to the breadth of topics covered; they do allow the occasional conservative viewpoint to to sneak in believe it or not. The Bangor Daily News has no paywall and I keep up with what is happening around the state on their web site. I really ought to buy a digital subscription to be fair. Maine's 1.3 million homogeneous residents (95% Caucasian) and small economy is not comparable to a state like Florida. There are 4-5 web sites that cover un-sensationalized science news which I enjoy visiting. That's more of a hobby interest thing for me.

The internet makes it so easy to filter the information stream to get to what interests me compared to the past. You could watch an hour of news on TV (and commercials) and only see a few things of real interest. It is a different paradigm; I can easily seek out what I am curious about rather than someone else deciding what my interests should be.

I agree the local news can be atrocious as far as sticking to the facts and some of the writing isn't of very good quality either.

70 this morning and headed to 83 today. Hope to finish washing chicken coops today. Have 1 1/2 left. Did get garden tilled yesterday but didn't get to hoe everything. Had to sucker my sweet corn we'll see how it does. Hoeing won't happen today 2.4 inches of rain last night.

I don't watch the local news unless I hear of something that catches my interest. But I do record it every night and then fast forward to the weather.

Farmers here use weed wipers also.

Not many around here use a weed wiper. Most just use a bushhogg. Some use whatever sprayer that they have for row crops. Others don't use a thing then wonder why they don't have any grass. I've seen them before and the best ones are the ones that use a counter rotating wick.

They seem to work really good on Johnson grass because it gets taller than the other grasses. Thistle and Marestail don't do good with a weed wiper. They are much easier to kill with a sprayer in the rosette stage. Once they reach boot and start to set flowers the stems start to hallow and the translocation of the herbicide is greatly reduced. Stems can hallow for two reasons. One is the plant starts to consume it's self to feed the flower to make seeds. The other is there are stalk boring worms that hollow out the stalks.

71°F and only .02 inches rain last 24 hours.

We brought our 9 yo granddaughter and her 8 yo cousin back to Hawaii with us, Granddaughter is here for remainder of summer, cousin for 3 weeks. One could say life will be quite different for us this summer LOL

Farmer - some of those numbers you cite make me tired

It IS great to be back home, back in my own bed. Arizona was nice, but not researching a move there. The dogs are pleased to have us back as well as 2 playmates.
Our sitters did a fantastic job and it sounds like they enjoyed their stay here as well.

Well, back to reality. Had to make a Costco run to Kona yesterday, errands in Hilo today.

It's not just the small local news that gets it wrong. In 2000 when the circus came to Florida {Gore V Bush}, even small counties like Calhoun were contacted by big city papers. The New York Daily News {I think} talked to Margie about why a overwhelming Democratic county like ours voted so heavily for Bush. {When the rest of the south started the switch from one party to the other in 1964 with the Civil Rights Legislation getting passed, we didn't. The county always goes Republican in state and national elections, but everyone is still registered Democratic} She explained that was the way the county always voted, but when they wrote the story, she was misquoted, and they tried to make it sound like it was unhanded stuff going on. She contacted them to get it changed in the online paper, but they couldn't be bothered.

And back when I had free time, I used to listen to Le Show on NPR. The host, Harry Shearer {also does voices for the Simpsons}, had a segment called LA Dog Trainer, Corrections of the Week. He would read the corrections for the LA Times, and it would take about 5-7 minutes just to read through them. It was always funny.

I stopped watching tv over ten years ago when the amount of time taken up by commercials got so obnoxious that it wasn't worth it. Not for the ten percent of the programming that had some content. My home page is cnn.com so I get the news constantly and I can read my local paper online also. So I switched to the web to get "entertained" a long time ago, but love a good movie occasionally. And once in a while I will sit at the tv and go up the channels to see what is there. What a lot of mindless junk is on there. Like walking into a food store where most of the food are marshmallows and twinkies. Which is good because that is what is between the ears of the the Kardashians anyway.

Good afternoon all. 73F and clear this morning, clouding up this afternoon, temp 89F garage temp 91F. Got the work-bench mostly done. Need to find some 2 ft wide sheet metal to top the bench and shelf with. Only a few boxes left in the garage, mostly furniture which isn't going to fit in house and will be sold.
