RS, does it feel some days like the spare parts are all made of kryptonite and unobtanium? Clearly they are seen as very rare substances to be highly valued. Instead of lumps of iron...

Well I have two good things to report. First is that I was the "victim" of one of those perhaps somewhat rare acts of kindness that strangers do to each other. Went through McDonalds a few mornings ago and the person in front paid for my breakfast. That sure made my day.
And then a few hours ago I was told my very reduced but still reasonable offer was accepted, and the owner sent me this pic. He must have quite a farm on the water with his own dock. Out in the middle of nowhere. Wonderful...

LOL ...

Drew,

You are quite timely indeed:

Head to HD for the woodruff keys - they don't carry them.

So I hit Lowes thinking maybe ...

They're at least a little better: while they don't have woodruff keys, they did at least have square keys ...

So in defeat I start to head for home ... about 1/2 way there the thought popped into my head that I should call Harbor Freight.

As luck would have it, they had one 80 piece woodruff key assortment in stock, which was on sale for $7.99

10 minutes later I walked out of the store with it in hand ... even got to use my 20% off coupon code they had texted me yesterday ... probably never want for a woodruff key for the rest of my natural born life :D

Congrats on your new acquisition

Got the jackshafts pulled from the hubs ... one side definitely bad ... probably squeak by on the other side, which feels pretty good. They use a 204 series bearing which I think is pretty common.

Got all the teeth welded on the box blade ripper shanks.

Drained and pulled the tube off the hydraulic cylinder ... messy job. Still need to wire brush/sand the outside and clean off the hydraulic fluid. Probably hit it will a little phosphoric to try and kill any remaining rust before I squirt it.

Also cleaned up all four tie rods with a wire brush in the angle grinder. Those will get dipped in muriatic acid for a quick de-rusting and stripping, along with the nuts. All were pretty rusty.

Shot some PB Blaster on the bolt for the clevis ... will try and pull that off after I get the cylinder reassembled, so it can be de-rusted and shot.

I finished mowing the yard today (Sat) - felt good (that's a real challenge for my stiffness and back pain), still considering zero-turns to make things a bit easier.

Happy Father's Day !!!

well scaredy, you're up early. Me too...
78 degrees already in the dark, going up to 96 today, 98 tomorrow. No rain until Wednesday.

Just poured first cup of coffee. 69° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 81° with a passing shower in the morning. It's Fathers Day. Need a day of rest after 2 days of celebrating birthday. Maybe a little NASCAR in afternoon.
To all the Fathers out there. Enjoy the Day.
Drew, nice picture and congrats on the boat purchase.
MFW, hope the drama ends soon.
DavidS, nice pictures even if they are turned.
Schicken, don't expect a zero turn to have a better ride than a lawn tractor.
RS, I keep waiting for my 15 year old equipment to start needing repairs. I do not look forward to it.
Good Morning All.

72 clearing and heading to 94.

Got our piece of TS Bill last night - 1.57 inches of rain, wind knocked off some branches and power went out about 7pm until 5am. Of course, I've still not invested in a back-up gen. A/C is cranking now to get the humidity out of the house.

Drew, great news about your boat.

David, thanks for trying so hard to send us the pics.

Happy Fathers' Day everyone.

At 6 am it is 79 degrees with it hitting 98 again today and no rain. Have to go to Lowes and get material for this weeks work and then help the wife shuck some more corn. She bought 4 bushels of sweet corn for $16 and they gave her a bushel of beans as well. She will be canning all day again today

Happy Fathers Day to all

Drew - You lead a blessed life, it must be giving your plastic turtles a happy habitat. Congratulations on getting the new yacht. And you are inviting all of us on TBN to go fishing when???? :D As far as the birds go... by inviting them with seed, then everything is for grabs.

63 and steady rain right now. Looks like rain all day with a high of 80. Oh well...I do have a couple procedures I have to update for an AS 9100 (aerospace) audit as well as a training presentation. That will keep me busy today (especially the way I type!).
I was at work from 0600 to about 1300 yesterday on fixing a major screw up by one of our suppliers...fixing may not be the best way to put it...at this point, it's damage control.
But, on a happier note, I did get the lawn mowed yesterday!! I should have mowed the field too, but by the time I got the lawn mowed, I was too hungry and too tired.
It sure felt good to sleep in today!

56F on a rainy morning. Light winds, gentle rain. We might get close to an inch total. Still no 80's in the ten day forecast.

Capt. Drew, congratulations on the boat. Wish you many happy hours on the water. Now you need a 1st Mate. :D

Happy Father's Day.

Drew congratulations on the boat. I'm sure you will get lots of enjoyment putting around the various bodies of water you live close to. Perhaps RS can construct a barge to put your tractor in tow for the long voyages.

Looked at several boats yesterday in the Va Beach area had a great lunch at Bubbas on the water now just chilling.

Big storms came thru about midnight last night woke up briefly then back to sleep

Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers out there

Drew, congrats on Half Moon. With the nice wood floor in there, I'd be telling peeps to leave their shoes on the dock. Stocking feet only. :)

My garden is kaput. Too much water. Most plants have died, but some are struggling to stay afloat. The weeds have no problems flourishing in the swamp conditions... Since it is tilled deeply, you can't even step 1 foot into it without sinking down at least 3-4". Yard needs mowing. I will have to do what I can get through wet. I guess I need a 4wd mower.

Yep...crime...mostly due to the opiate invasion...is coming to New England.

Vermont Governor Schumlin thinks junkies need treatment...I say treat 'em like the criminals they are and a "cold turkey" treatment (in prison) is what they need.

68F this morning and sunny. High 89F. Winds SSE at 10 to 20 mph.

MFW, heard good things about the MS261, but as I understand it, Stihl no longer sells it. Or they sell one with the same model number, but it is computerized. I got pretty confused by all the model numbers and variations at the dealership, and ended up with an MS271. Nice saw, but it doesn't feature a priming bulb which makes starting difficult because I always run the tank dry at the end of the day. Anyway, I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to the new electronic/computerized stuff, having been burned by so much of it in the automotive world. Give me an old fashioned carb anytime and I'll be happy. At least until Stihl stops selling parts for them, as they did on the 032AV I used to have...

Rip, hope you're getting things dried out and cleaned up. Drought in the west, floods in the east, signs of the approaching apocalypse?

RS, I started off with a Harbor Freight chain sharpener, which worked but wasn't very good at keeping the cuts consistent. Spent the big bucks on an Oregon machine, and I have to confess I don't do a whole lot better with it. Both use a steel finger to position the saw teeth, and for some reason it doesn't seem to be all that repeatable. The instructions say to find the shortest tooth, set the stop for that, and do the rest all the same. But if it's the first time sharpening a chain, why should any of the teeth be shorter than the rest? Can't be that much wear, and a look at the dulled edges confirms it. So I end up getting two or three sharpenings out of a chain before the teeth are too short to use. But at least if I stick with Stihl chain it seems to last about twice as long as the Oregon stuff, so I spend less time changing chain and more time cutting.

It's also starting to sound like you'd be money ahead picking up a used lathe on Craig's List to keep the Simplicity going. Hey, a man can never have too many tools, right? And you gotta wonder what sort of cheese they made those shafts and keyways out of. Or if the fit wasn't what it should have been right from the factory? You may get by for a little while with a spot of weld metal on the end of the key, but that slop is still in there and it will end up breaking the weld loose again. Hate to say it, but is it time to pass the Simplicity along and get something a little less complicated?

And don't get me started on what the likes of HD and Lowes big box stores have done to the little mom'n'pop hardware stores that used to carry everything. The big box stores only carry stuff that moves, and that's not little bits like woodruff keys. The mom'n'pop places didn't do enough volume to match the big places' discounts, so they and their complete inventories have gone the way of the dodo bird. If you're in farm country you might get lucky and stumble across a bearing specialty house (we have one called Bearing, Belt, and Chain, cash only so forget about using your Visa) or you can wait a week or two for maybe the right part to show up from Amazon. I guess we're just supposed to throw stuff away when it breaks and shuffle off to the big box store for a crappy new one. Good for the (Chinese) economy and all that.

Drew, congrats on the new boat! Hope we'll be seeing some of your own sunset shots in the near future.

David, I remember Jerome being a cute little place with streets lined with gift shops. Is it still sliding down the mountain side?

Thomas, sorry to hear about the loss. There's nothing lower than a sneak thief. We have one in our neighborhood that just got is picture in the paper again for ripping off the fire department. Last time it was the other neighbors and the local elementary school. They gave him a slap on the wrist last time; hopefully something more substantial for this round. But they have to find him first. Out here, Roy, it's meth that drives 'em crazy, and the damage it causes to their brains is permanent so there's not much chance of rehabilitation in prison. All they learn there is to be better criminals. The state can't build jails fast enough, or even find the money to pay for all of 'em. I say bring back the old chain gangs. We've got lots of litter that needs cleaning up, and wildfires to fight every summer, and homeless encampments that need razed, plenty of work for weak minds, strong backs and no pay.

Off to fire up the sprayer again before it gets too hot and windy.

Happy day to all you fathers out there!

Good Morning. 1055, partly cloudy, 92F {105F heat index} with 62% humidity. Forecast high of 92F with 60% chance of thunderstorms today, and a low of 76F tonight. Too hot to do any outside work today. I did get out early and water the garden and pick what needed it the worse. Also walked down to the graveyard to wish Daddy a happy Father's Day. If it cools down enough before dark we will drive to where Margie's Dad is buried too.

Nice boat Drew.

David, those are some cool old tractors. Thanks for posting.

Ron, I think Cup is taking the holiday off today. I recorded the X-whatever race yesterday, but haven't watched it yet. I just got through with the F1 Austrian Grand Prix. My man came in 2nd, so the points race has tightened up again.

Happy Father's Day to all.

These days I try to leave the chainsaws in the shed as much as possible. Back in my grass cutting day, I cut firewood for sale during the winter, so I've already done more than enough for a lifetime. But I found that using a hand file with the guide worked best for me. The few minutes it took to sharpen the chain allowed you to catch your breath, and you could see what each tooth needed. The chains also lasted much longer. I would hit it a couple of licks with the file every tank of gas just to keep it good and sharp.
