time to get the little feller ready for summer work... the original battery appears to be shot, what is a good replacement that won't break the budget? I bought a new battery for my cub tank last fall and I thought it was terrible how much they'd increased in price since the last one. I can't imagine how much this one will cost me.

I can' tell you which is best (I think there's a lot of subjectivity involved) but but be prepared for nearly a $150 bill. :(

In my opinion, the best battery for the money is an OPTIMA. Car, Marine, & RV Batteries | OPTIMABATTERIES

The REDTOP® high-performance AGM battery is the ultimate starting battery designed to deliver a powerful burst of ignition power for a reliable start-up every time, whether it's used as a truck battery, automotive battery, or for other applications. The REDTOP will outperform and outlast traditional batteries in demanding cranking/starting applications. With impressive high-power delivery and extreme resistance to the most common causes of battery failure, the REDTOP is ideal for trucks, SUVs, hot rods, street cars and other applications that require a spillproof starting battery. Its reputation as a truck battery or automotive battery is unsurpassed.

yah, this one's shot... charged it all night and it's still down. off to the battery store.

it lasted 5 years I think. about all that can be expected these days I guess.

btw, is the sylinoid (sp?) that shuts the engine down when you turn the key off, dependent on battery power? we jump started the tractor yesterday, but it wouldn't turn off with the key. I had to pull the kill switch. I assume it is dependent on 12v, but I want to ask, just in case.

what killswitch? They either had a manual kill or an electric kill.

Id double check your alternator to see if its pumping out enough juice

Only 5 years from a battery is terrible IMO.
I expect and generally get near double that out of a battery.

Very well can get much more than that too. All depends on how the upkeep was on the battery.... connections, wire condition, alternator, if it was pre charged before being used.. how many times it was ran down to nothing... exposure to weather... a lot plays into the life of a battery..

I'm 69 years old and on average I've always experienced 5 years to be about it. Sure some last longer, by a little, but not many. I figure I'll change them at 5 just so I don't get 'left beside the road'.

Maybe a warmer section of the country increases life.

It has its advantages but see a lot decreased by humidity/moisture also... even though most can go much longer 5 years aint far off what most see... just part of it

I could only imagine what enough constant cold could do to one

The first Interstate 31-MHP lasted 2 years and 1 week, 1 week past the warranty period. A cell went bad. The Interstate regional supplier in Melbourne, Florida gave me a new one under warranty anyway - that was in July 2004. It still started my tractor last month at 0 degrees temperature. It's never had to have a battery charger put on it it's whole life. I'm sticking with Interstate for obvious reasons.

finally chased down this problem:

replaced the battery - it was shot...
alternator checked perfectly

the problem appears to have been the cut-off sylenoid (sp?) drawing current and draining the battery.

when we replaced the battery, it was noticed that there were sparks when the ground cable was attached. a test light showed there WAS current being drawn. further investigation showed the sylenoid (sp?) was not tripping when the key was turned off. after some cleaning and wiggling, it began to work. i'll watch it a while and see if it's an intermittent. i put a battery disconnect on the ground post so i can prevent battery drain.

crazy little bothersome thing, but somewhat of a PITA.
