A log splitter valve will have a detent return, semi-auto.

Prince makes a valve with two levers that is full auto.

You push two levers in parallel, and the log splitter will extend and at the end of stroke, will retract and go to neutral.

It cost more but will save time.

With your MDT splitter go with the Speeco or Energy style valve. The Prince valve has the cylinder ports reversed which will require changing the piping.

I wanted to check back in case anyone has the same symptoms and wanted to know where I ended up. I ended up buying a $69 Northern Tool valve and it mounted exactly the same as the MTD original. That fixed my problem, so clearly it was the valve, as most in the know already knew. Now the ram moves faster, doesn't pause on every piece of wood building up pressure, and when it does pause on a hard piece, it does so for just a second, not ten. And I don't have to jimmy the lever back and forth. Initially I was concerned because the auto kick-out on the return didn't seem right--took to long to kick-out. But after a few cycles that straightened out and now it works great. Glad I did it, saves me a lot of frustration not to mention time.
