Hi all, This is a concern of mine as to the actual tilling path of a stated tiller width. Is a king kutter 60" tiller actually tilling a 60" path? Do all the advertised dimensions hold true for other units? I have a 1739 E gear drive massey ferguson. It is 38 hp and 33 hp pto. It is rated at 1600 lbs. lift at 24" out. My tire width with R4 tires is right about 61" to 62". Would a 60" tiller work or should I step up to a 72" unit? Just wondering if my tractor will handle the 72" one? Any one else have or has had the same issues? Thanks for your input.

You should be able to use a 72" tiller with your tractor. You might be better off with a 5 1/2' tiller. Deere has a 65" tiller iirc and I am sure others have similar ones too. If you have the hydro transmission then you would be good to go with the 72" since you can easily match your speed to get the best results.

I have used my Deere 673 tiller with my 820 tractor 31ptohp and found it worked pretty good but it was loaded. It works much better with the 4520.

My 60" tiller is very close to the exact dimensions stated. I run a BX2200 with 13ph at the PTO. Most limit the BX to 48" but mine works fine and does not load down the tractor.

I suspect 33ph at the PTO will be enough for a 72"

I used my Howard 60" tiller behind my x749 mower but it certainly knew it was back there.
The 60" Howard worked great behind the 820, so it went with the tractor when I sold it.

How fast is you lowest gear ??
If your lowest gear runs just over 1 MPH or less at near PTO speed you should be fine with a 72" tiller.
Low gear on my 28.3 PTO HP gear tractor runs around 1 MPH at PTO speed and handles a 72" KK tiller.

Thanks all . I know there are differences between the 60 &72 sizes--the inbetween sizes---- .All my local choices are just 60&72 right now. I am not really interested in looking farther for a unit. My ground speed at my lowest gear is around 0.97 mph,1.35 low 2, 1.86 low 3, with R4 tires. I think I will concentrate my local search on a 72" unit. My budget limits a lot of further choices.

With that gearing and PTO HP I don't think you would have any problem with a 72" tiller.

I have to 5' king kutter II my tractor is about 62" wide with about 20 pto hp. It is a hydro so I can go any speed I want with instant adjustments. I have had no problems with power what so ever. I don't remember having a problem with the width difference but then I normally overlap a little plus I think actually tire tread is a. Little less than tire width. I can measure it for you if you want.

Mossdown, save yourself some $ and stick with King Kutter for you tiller.. Best bang for your buck.. I think like others said, you should be fine with a 72"er.. Happy tilling!!!

I went out this Sunday and measured inside cutting dimensions on a 60" kink kutter tiller and it came to be about 58" outside tip to tip. The 72" unit was 67" to 68" tip to tip. These measurements were stretching from one end to the other with a tape measure. I will for sure be getting a 72" unit. I have a line on a Kioti brand pretty sure these are Italian made. I can pick it up for close to a grand. The thing looks almost new and I am pretty sure it is a very little used 5 year old model. Will be taking a closer look and maybe pickup this weekend.

I picked up a 65" sicma-phoenix- Tiller . It covers all my tire tracks by 2" each side. It was a barn find from someone who had moved to Florida. I did repaint it red to match my Massey. This thing is a heavy beast. I look forward to many years of use.
