I have found over the years that with most new and a lot of used cars the headlights are not aimed properly right from the dealer. That just adds to the aggravation.

Makes you wonder what all those dealer PDI charges are for !

The charges are to scrape off the QC stickers and retorque the wheel nuts. I have seen cars come out of GenAuto Shippers in Oshawa with the wheel nuts on finger tight.

Forum threads where all the posters agree with the OP's stance are way too boring to read. Who is going to say that driving without your lights on in bad weather is a bad idea? There are no new or conflicting ideas to ponder here, so I skipped from page one to page nine to post this completely useless message, but then, most of mine are...

Compromise: One light on, one light off.

Seeing as we are going to go that route....Go ahead and drive in a snowstorm with your headlights off and don't bother crying the blues when you get hit, possibly head on.

Yes this is a common problem that has blinded me before.

When they introduced day time running lights, it was for a **** good reason, and now all of a sudden they aren't required anymore. Cant imagine why, since they DO work, even on a sunny day, never mind a snowy day....and i suspect that people that dont use their head lights, are the same one that dont use signal lights either, which is plain ignorant and careless.

Can't signal with one hand on a cell phone and the other on the steering wheel and their head up their azz.

a little off topic, but related to auto lighting,,
who's bright idea (no pun intended) was it to have back up lights come on
when somebody locks a car? I have seen this many times while trying to park in a
crowded parking lot, you see the back up lights thinking the car is going to back out,
and the spot will open up, but nope, nobody in the car! they have locked the car
and walked away, and the lights are all on, including the back up lights... very annoying~!

Been faked out by same Dutch. Given the # of people that just throw a car in reverse, and back up w/o looking, makes for a slow mall crawl.

Another lighting "advancement" is the vehicles that turn Off the headlight on that side, when you turn on that turn signal.

Might be tolerable in city night driving, but it's not something I'd own.

I found that mostly on Mopar stuff.
We have a GMC that does the same (I have it set to turn off 5 seconds after locking). The idea is that its a perimeter light so that you can find your car and/or see a potential mugger hiding in the shadows next to it.

If you are talking about turn-off-adjacent-headlight-when-that-turn-signal-is-on, yes, that is where I've noticed it - Chrysler cars and trucks.

Headlight/signal pods have shrunk down to the point that the argument for doing this is that the headlight will drown out the visiiblity of the turn signal. Me, I'd sooner have the headlight on, for making a turn at night in the country..... just put the TS bulbs back out at the corners of the front end, where they belong.......

I just can't for the life of me wonder how in the world anyone gets blinded by a high beam motorcycle light sufficient to cause them the slightest danger during daylight hours. All I can say is if you see something like that don't stare at it which is most likely the cause of your issue. The main reason why anyone rides with high beams on in the first place is to wake up the otherwise , punk kid, old far, soccer mom with a minivan full of brats, pissed off menopausal woman or your everyday random drunk sitting there ahead of you. That's the statistical main cause of most regular bike accidents. A guy i used to know taught motorcycle safety. He had this article in a bike mag called "The Fatal Front". It went on to explain how the vast majority of all fatal (regular, not mach 2) accidents came out of a 30 degree cone centered on the front of the bike. That's where most of the folks I mentioned in the previous sentence will come from when they clobber you. Turning right on red, blowing a stop sign or yield, turning left ect....thats where the chief danger lies and all you can do about it is be as visible as possible as you to a major extent are at their mercy. It doesn't really matter who's fault it was if you're smashed like a pancake. If you drive fast and weave in and out of traffic you need it all the more and in the end it probably won't save you anyways. On the other hand low beam isn't all that visible in bright daylight . I' always ran my bike on high beam in the day time and for just that reason and I would today if I just hadn't given it up for a variety of reasons.

Light intensity or brightness has nothing to do with the ambient light. A 100 watt bulb is just as bright in the middle of the day as the middle of the night. The ONLY difference is the level of contrast between the light source and ambient conditions.

High beams during the day only prove the driver of the vehicle with the high beams is inattentive to their vehicle systems and/or lacking any common courtesy to other tax paying drivers.

One thing worse than vehicles with high beams in daylight is those MC with irritating blinking headlights in your rear view mirror during DAYLIGHT. If you are that afraid then sell the bike and get a truck.

Yes, they are irritating, but they do save lives because they work. I used to have a modulating headlight in one of my motorcycles years ago. Having people pull out or turn left in front of you is a much bigger problem then most are aware of, especially if you ride a motorcycle. I've changed all the lights on my bike to LED and that alone makes a huge diff, but i wouldn't go as far as saying "to sell the bike and buy a truck".

I agree they might be helpful in city traffic but not much value in following me on the interstate for miles and miles. The rider definitely was not aware of or concerned with others.

Regardless on how annoying headlight modulators may be, i dont blame those that use them to keep from getting cut off or run into. Being a rider myself, and having been cut-off more times then i care to remember, the most used excuse by the offenders is " I didnt see him". It also help me to see other guys on bikes better. Yes, even if i am being followed....all i have to do is move my head a bit or move the mirrors.
BTW....the modulator cant just be shut off at will. The ones i used to have anyways...... they are on all the time, except when the high beam is in use

You're right and shame on me for only being concerned with the aggravation to me. There's really no excuse in being upset with someone else bothering me while they are enjoying something they choose to do. :D

When I was a militaryTransportation fleet manager for a six hundred vehicle fleet, I ordered DLR be used 24/7 by all drivers everywhere except in tactical situations. In two weeks we cut the vehicle accident rate by half, mostly back-up accidents. Headlights are very important aids to visible detection by other drivers, coming or going. They also mitigate against highway hypnosis accidents, big time, on long-haul trips. 4-way flashers must NOT be used frivolously, however. It makes people swear and ignore them when there really is a hazard. I am absolutely convinced that DLR saves lives!...and fenders.
